Newcastle United striker now agrees two-year contract as exit confirmed
Dylan Stephenson will join National League side Dagenham & Redbridge following the expiration of his contract with Newcastle United later this month.
Newcastle United revealed their academy retained list on May 30, with Stephenson among 13 young talents set to depart.
The forward, who joined the Magpies at the age of 14, made his non-competitive senior debut against Atalanta at St James’ Park in July 2022. He also scored in the 5-0 triumph over Saudi Pro League team Al Hilal a few months later.
Upon returning from the Middle East, Stephenson joined the Scottish Premiership side Hamilton Academical on loan. He scored the decisive goal on his debut against Patrick Thistle, but it remained his only goal for the team.
In contrast, his half-season loan at National League North club South Shields last campaign was much more fruitful, netting eight times.
Mariners boss Elliot Dickman, who previously coached Stephenson at Newcastle’s under-21s, showed interest in signing the 21-year-old permanently. Despite this interest, Stephenson chose to sign a two-year contract with Dagenham, who play in a higher league.
“I’m delighted to get the deal over the line,” Stephenson shared. “I’m excited for the season. I’m a hard-working player and you’ll definitely get to know that. That’s my biggest trait, and I’ll hopefully get a few goals as well.”
Several other players released by Newcastle are still searching for new clubs. Among them are Amadou Diallo and Michael Ndiweni, both of whom made their Premier League debuts against Chelsea last November.
The list of released players also includes Will Brown, Jude Smith, Jordan Hackett, Matthew Bondswell, Lucas De Bolle, Kyle Crossley, Shaun Mavididi, and Rodrigo Vilca, as well as under-18 players Taylor Ross and Carter Milmore.
As these players look to continue their careers elsewhere, Dylan Stephenson’s move to Dagenham & Redbridge marks a new chapter filled with potential and promise.
