Newcastle United is actively pursuing Barcelona’s center-back Andreas Christensen this summer, as reported by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo.
The Magpies initially sought to acquire the 28-year-old in the January transfer window. However, Christensen was not interested in the move, and former Barcelona manager Xavi considered him too integral to the team to let go.
Newcastle has reignited their interest in the former Chelsea star. Manager Eddie Howe believes that securing the Danish international will significantly enhance Newcastle’s defense.
Howe sees Christensen as a pivotal addition due to his extensive Premier League experience and versatility.
With Hansi Flick appointed as Barcelona’s new manager, Christensen is reportedly excited about working under the German.
However, Barcelona’s financial difficulties might necessitate selling him to balance their books. Christensen, who joined Barcelona on a free transfer in the summer of 2022, could be a valuable asset for them to cash in on.
Newcastle may be willing to make a substantial financial commitment this summer, especially after missing out on European qualification. Signing Christensen could be a critical move for them.
Christensen’s adaptability makes him an attractive target. Besides his primary role as a center-back, he has also played as a defensive midfielder, showcasing his ball-playing skills throughout the 2023-24 season. This versatility is one of the key factors that have drawn Newcastle’s interest.
Last season, Christensen played 42 games across all competitions, starting 37 of them. Convincing him to leave Barcelona, a team competing in Europe, for Newcastle, which currently lacks European competition and title contention, will be challenging.
