It’s Happening – Eddie Howe & Board Knows It’ – Keith Wyness drops PIF-Newcastle verdict claim
Keith Wyness, former Everton CEO, believes the owners of Newcastle United are keen to ensure their success at St James’ Park positively impacts the Saudi Pro League.
In a recent episode of the Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness discussed the Public Investment Fund’s (PIF) urgent need for global recognition and the pressure on Newcastle’s leadership to achieve this.
The Saudi sovereign wealth fund completed its acquisition of Newcastle United in October 2021 for £305 million, ending Mike Ashley’s 14-year tenure. The new owners quickly steered the club into the Champions League, with Eddie Howe’s team securing a seventh-place finish last season.
Wyness believes the owners will be patient, but they are aiming for another top-four finish next season to maintain their momentum. Speaking on the Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, he emphasized the importance of a one-to-two-year plan for the club.
“The pressure is always there for them right now. They will want to be in that top four next year, that’s a key part for them,” Wyness stated. He highlighted that the ultimate goal is to establish Newcastle United as consistent performers in European competitions over the next five years.
The PIF is eager for success and global recognition, not just for Newcastle but also to enhance the reputation of the Saudi Pro League. Wyness noted, “They will want to see growth and opportunities. The owners are thirsty for success.”
While the owners are prepared to show patience, they urgently seek to be perceived as good owners. This urgency extends to their desire to positively influence the Saudi Pro League. Wyness added, “The pressure will be on. Eddie Howe knows it and the board knows it.”
Despite their willingness to be patient, the owners are aware that immediate results are crucial. Wyness warned, “It’s got to happen, otherwise, you could end up getting chopped.”
The Newcastle United ownership, driven by the Saudi sovereign wealth fund, is committed to achieving both Premier League and global success. Their ambition extends beyond Newcastle, aiming to elevate the Saudi Pro League’s standing in the football world. The pressure is on Eddie Howe and the board to deliver, knowing that their performance will be closely scrutinized by the ambitious owners.
