Worse than Miley: Howe must ruthlessly ditch Newcastle flop who lost 100% duels

Newcastle United started their defense of the League Cup in a positive way, securing a comfortable 4-1 victory over Bradford City at a lively St. James’ Park.

As the current holders of the trophy, there was a hope that the team would put on a dominant display, and for the most part, they delivered.

The result was never really in doubt, with the Magpies establishing a commanding 3-0 lead before Bradford managed to score a consolation goal. The win means the team progresses to the next round, keeping their hopes of retaining the cup alive.

While the overall team performance was convincing, the nature of a cup game against lower-league opposition allows a manager to look at individual performances more closely.

It’s a chance for players who haven’t been starting regularly to make a strong case for more minutes. For some, it was a night to impress, but for others, it was a frustrating evening that highlighted their current place in the squad.

Two players, in particular, had very different reasons for feeling disappointed when they left the pitch.

The first is young midfielder Lewis Miley. For a 19-year-old academy graduate, these games are vital for gaining experience.

In many ways, Miley showed exactly why there is so much excitement about his potential. When you look at his statistics from the match, it’s clear he was actively involved and contributed positively to the team’s play.

He was combative, winning the majority of his physical battles, and his passing was accurate, helping the team maintain control.

He also showed a creative spark by setting up three chances for his teammates, which is an encouraging sign for a central midfielder.

However, the night was marred by a couple of costly mistakes. The most notable one was a risky pass on the edge of his own penalty area that led directly to Bradford’s goal.

It was a moment that will undoubtedly frustrate the young player and his coaches. It serves as a learning experience, a reminder that at the highest level, concentration must be maintained every single second.

The challenge for Miley is to take the many good things from his performance and eliminate those rare but costly errors as he continues his development.

The other player who will have been disappointed is the more experienced defender, Emil Krafth. Given a rare start to prove his worth, the 31-year-old Swedish international failed to grasp the opportunity.

His performance was unfortunately well below the standard required. The statistics from his time on the pitch paint a very clear picture of a player who struggled to make any positive impact on the game.

The table below summarizes Emil Krafth’s key performance metrics against Bradford City:

Performance MetricStatistic
Minutes Played61
Tackles Made0
Interceptions0
Blocks0
Ground Duels Won0 out of 3
Aerial Duels Won0 out of 0
Errors Leading to a Shot1

As the data shows, Krafth was largely ineffective in his defensive duties. He failed to make a single tackle, interception, or block, and he did not win any of his duels.

Perhaps most tellingly, he made an error that led to a shot for the opposition. In a game where Newcastle dominated possession and were playing at home, a defender should be able to contribute more, both in shutting down the opponent and in helping start attacks.

Unfortunately, Krafth’s performance did little to suggest he can be relied upon for important Premier League matches.

Therefore, as Newcastle turns its attention back to the league and a tough match against Arsenal, manager Eddie Howe faces a straightforward decision.

While Lewis Miley’s errors were part of an otherwise promising display, Emil Krafth’s performance offered very few positives.

The manager will almost certainly bring back a proven starter like Kieran Trippier or Tino Livramento for the right-back position. For Miley, the journey is about learning and growth.

For Krafth, this game may have confirmed that his future at the club is very much as a squad player, rather than a genuine contender for a starting spot. The 4-1 scoreline was a success for the team, but for individuals, the story was more complicated.
