‘The word overnight was’ – Craig Hope has bad news as he shares update on NUFC star Dan Burn

Newcastle United’s miserable afternoon at the Stadium of Light was made even worse by the news that Dan Burn has suffered a rib fracture following a painful collision during the Tyne-Wear derby.

The Magpies were already reeling from a 1–0 defeat to Sunderland, and losing one of their most reliable players only added to the sense of frustration and concern around the club.

The injury occurred during a heavy challenge with Sunderland defender Nordi Mukiele. As the two went in for the same ball, Mukiele’s knee appeared to catch Burn flush on the ribs. At first, the 33-year-old tried to play through the pain.

He received treatment on the pitch and briefly carried on, showing the toughness and commitment Newcastle supporters have come to expect from him. However, it quickly became clear that the injury was more serious than first thought.

Burn went down again not long after and was eventually forced off just before half-time. Speaking after the match, Eddie Howe revealed that the defender was struggling to breathe during the interval, prompting medical staff to act quickly.

Burn was taken straight to hospital for scans, and reports later confirmed that he had suffered a rib fracture. It was a worrying moment, and one that overshadowed what was already a disappointing derby day for Newcastle.

The setback is a huge blow for both Burn and the team. He has been one of Newcastle’s most dependable performers this season and has barely missed a game. In fact, he had started all but one of the club’s 16 Premier League matches in the 2025–26 campaign before this injury.

The only game he missed was the 2–1 win over Manchester City last month, and that absence was due to a one-match suspension after he picked up five yellow cards, not through injury.

Given the nature of rib fractures and the recovery time usually involved, it is highly likely that Burn has already played his final match of 2025. That will be a bitter disappointment for a player who has been so central to Howe’s plans.

Beyond the league, Burn has also been trusted in Europe, starting all six of Newcastle’s Champions League fixtures this season. His experience, physical presence and leadership have been vital, especially in high-pressure matches.

Newcastle will now have to reshuffle at the back at a crucial point in the season. There is some cautious optimism that Sven Botman could return in time for the next Premier League fixture against Chelsea on December 20.

The Dutch defender has been dealing with a back problem for some time, and while his return would offer a boost, it remains to be seen whether he will be fully ready to step straight back in.

The timing of Burn’s injury could hardly be worse. Newcastle currently sit 12th in the Premier League table after 16 games, having suffered their sixth defeat of the campaign against Sunderland.

That position is well below the club’s ambitions, and there is growing pressure to find consistency and improvement, especially in attacking areas. Losing a senior defender who brings stability at the back only adds to the challenge Eddie Howe faces.

Despite the setback, there is still a sense that Newcastle can recover. The fixture list over the coming weeks is relatively kind, and the team will believe they can collect much-needed points as the season moves toward its second half.

However, doing so without Dan Burn will not be easy. His absence will be felt not just on the pitch, but in the dressing room too.

For now, the priority is Burn’s health and recovery. Newcastle will hope the injury heals cleanly and that he can return in the new year ready to play his part. Until then, the Magpies must dig deep, adjust quickly, and find a way to cope without one of their most trusted warriors at the heart of the defence.
