Report: Newcastle make contact to sign £146,000-a-week Champions League star this month, he’s open to move

Newcastle United is currently navigating a tricky path in the Premier League, finding itself in a position that is both promising and precarious. While the team sits just three points behind Manchester United with a game in hand, the optimism surrounding their push for a top-four finish has been dampened by a sudden and severe injury crisis.

The defensive line, which was the bedrock of their success last season, has been hit the hardest. With key players like Tino Livramento and Fabian Schar sidelined for months due to hamstring and ankle issues, manager Eddie Howe has been forced to look toward the January transfer market for immediate solutions.

In response to these setbacks, the Magpies have reportedly made formal contact with Inter Milan to discuss a move for veteran defender Stefan De Vrij. The Dutch international is a highly decorated professional who famously helped lead his side to a Champions League final recently.

However, his current situation in Italy has changed. Under the management of Christian Chivu, the 33-year-old has found himself falling down the pecking order at the San Siro. With his contract set to expire this coming summer, Inter is reportedly willing to listen to offers rather than losing him for free in a few months.

For Newcastle, the appeal of De Vrij is obvious. He brings a wealth of elite-level experience and leadership to a backline that is currently missing its senior figures. With Jamaal Lascelles expected to move on and Dan Burn still recovering from a punctured lung, the squad is dangerously thin at center-back.

Beyond just filling a gap, De Vrij offers the kind of composure and tactical intelligence that only comes from years of playing at the highest level of European football. While he currently earns a significant £146,000-a-week in Milan, his age and contract status mean that a transfer fee would likely be quite modest, making it a cost-effective solution for a club mindful of financial fair play regulations.

The player himself is also reportedly very open to a move to the Premier League. With the World Cup approaching this summer, De Vrij is desperate for regular playing time to ensure he secures a spot in the Netherlands squad.

A move to Tyneside would provide him with the perfect stage to prove his fitness and form. Although Nottingham Forest is also said to be monitoring his situation, the lure of playing for a club currently competing in the Champions League and fighting at the top end of the English table gives Newcastle a distinct advantage.

There is one minor tactical complication to consider. Because De Vrij has already played for Inter Milan in Europe this season, he would be ineligible to play in Newcastle’s final two group-stage matches of the Champions League.

However, should the Magpies successfully navigate their way into the knockout rounds, rules would allow him to be registered and added to the squad for the latter stages of the competition. Even if he only features in domestic matches initially, his presence would allow Howe to rotate his squad and keep other players fresh for those vital European nights.

This potential deal seems to be a rare example of a “win-win” for all parties involved. Inter Milan can get a high earner off their wage bill while receiving a small fee, Newcastle gets a ready-made leader to solve an injury crisis, and De Vrij gets the minutes he needs to fulfill his international ambitions.

With Sven Botman recently signing a new long-term deal and Malick Thiaw emerging as a key starter, De Vrij wouldn’t necessarily be expected to be a long-term fixture, but he would provide the high-quality depth needed to ensure the season doesn’t unravel. If the Newcastle board moves quickly, they could secure a Champions League-caliber star who could be the difference between a successful season and a disappointing one.
