Report: Dean Huijsen makes triple demand to Newcastle United after transfer talks

Newcastle United’s search for defensive reinforcements has led them to Bournemouth’s rising star Dean Huijsen, but securing his signature appears increasingly unlikely.
The 20-year-old center-back, who enjoyed a stellar debut Premier League season, has attracted serious interest from Chelsea and Liverpool—and his demands may put him out of Newcastle’s reach.
Despite initial discussions between the Magpies and Huijsen’s representatives, reports suggest the Spanish defender has set three non-negotiable conditions for his next club: substantial wages, guaranteed playing time, and Champions League football. Unfortunately for Eddie Howe’s side, they currently fall short on at least one of those fronts.
Newcastle’s best opportunity to land Huijsen may have come and gone last summer. Before Bournemouth secured his services from Juventus for just £15 million, the Magpies were loosely linked with a move. Now, after a breakout campaign, his price tag has skyrocketed to at least £50 million—a steep but justified valuation given his potential.
Had Newcastle acted decisively a year ago, they could have secured a long-term defensive partner for Sven Botman, forming a youthful backline alongside Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento. Instead, Bournemouth’s gamble paid off, and they now stand to make a significant profit while Newcastle scramble for alternatives.
Huijsen’s insistence on Champions League football highlights a growing problem for Newcastle. While the club has made strides under their Saudi-backed ownership, their absence from Europe’s premier competition this season puts them at a disadvantage against rivals like Chelsea and Liverpool.

The Magpies’ financial constraints, influenced by Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), further complicate matters.
While they can compete on wages, they cannot promise the same level of immediate success as their competitors—a crucial factor for a player of Huijsen’s caliber.
Guehi Emerges as Plan B
With Huijsen likely heading elsewhere, Newcastle have shifted focus to Crystal Palace’s Marc Guéhi. The England international was a target last summer, and the club retains strong interest.
Guéhi offers Premier League experience, leadership, and a more attainable profile, though Palace will demand a hefty fee.
While missing out on Huijsen is a blow, Guéhi represents a proven alternative. His arrival would still strengthen Newcastle’s defense, albeit without the same long-term project appeal that the Spanish youngster offered.
Huijsen’s reluctance to join signals a broader challenge for Newcastle. To compete for elite young talent, they must secure consistent Champions League football—something that remains uncertain despite their progress.
For now, the Magpies must be pragmatic. If they cannot land their top targets, identifying undervalued gems—as they did with Bruno Guimarães and Alexander Isak—will be crucial.
Huijsen may slip through their grasp, but the right alternative could still propel them forward. The summer window will test their recruitment team’s creativity and resolve.
