Report: 2024 Newcastle United target now considering Chelsea exit after seeing £21m move go wrong

Newcastle United were heavily linked with Filip Jorgensen in 2024, but the young goalkeeper chose a different path when he accepted a move to Chelsea. Months later, that decision appears to have backfired, and the player who turned down the chance to compete for a place at St James’ Park is now seriously thinking about leaving Stamford Bridge.

What once looked like a major step forward in his career has quickly turned into a frustrating chapter for one of Europe’s most promising goalkeepers.

Nick Pope has remained Newcastle’s number one for several years, but the club has continued to look for long-term options to compete with him. Before bringing in Odysseas Vlachodimos, Newcastle were very interested in Jorgensen, who was shining with Villarreal.

His performances in La Liga established him as one of the brightest young stoppers in Europe, and Newcastle believed he could eventually grow into a Premier League starter.

In fact, Jorgensen had just agreed a new contract with Villarreal in June 2024, committing his future to the Spanish club until 2029. But only weeks later, he made the surprising decision to leave Spain and join Chelsea for £21million.

Chelsea viewed him as someone who could push Robert Sanchez and eventually challenge for the starting role, and the transfer looked like a big opportunity for the Danish keeper to step into a bigger spotlight.

Unfortunately for Jorgensen, the reality of life at Chelsea has been very different from what he expected. Despite his potential and the significant fee involved, he has barely played in the Premier League, making only seven appearances.

Sanchez has remained the clear first-choice goalkeeper, and the chances of Jorgensen overtaking him anytime soon look slim. For a young keeper used to playing regularly and developing at a fast pace, the situation has become difficult to accept.

According to a recent update from Fabrizio Romano, Jorgensen is now considering leaving Chelsea in January. The Dane wants regular football and knows he won’t get the minutes he needs by staying on the bench in West London.

A loan move is now seen as the most realistic option, giving him a chance to revive his form and rebuild his confidence elsewhere.

Newcastle aren’t expected to be involved in that particular transfer chase, and in a way, they might feel relieved they didn’t push harder for him earlier in the year. Jorgensen’s difficulties at Chelsea raise questions about his readiness for the Premier League, and his lack of impact suggests he may not have been the right fit for Eddie Howe’s squad after all.

For now, he is no longer on Newcastle’s radar, and the club will look at other targets when the time comes to address their goalkeeping situation again.

While Newcastle have avoided a potential mistake, they will soon enter a period where big decisions must be made regarding their own goalkeepers. The 2026 season is expected to reshape the club’s plans, especially with Aaron Ramsdale’s situation still unresolved.

Ramsdale is on loan from Southampton and has already shown glimpses of what he can offer. His strong performance against Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup impressed fans and reminded Howe of the qualities he admired back when they worked together at Bournemouth.

However, Ramsdale still hasn’t started a Premier League match for Newcastle, and Howe needs to see consistency and reliability before committing to a permanent transfer.

The club knows the goalkeeper position is one of the most important areas of the pitch, and they won’t rush into a long-term decision without being fully convinced.

Ramsdale’s future at Newcastle is still in his hands, but the club is also keeping an open mind. If he fails to prove he is the right long-term option, Newcastle will explore other goalkeepers and stay prepared for all scenarios.

The Jorgensen situation is a reminder that not every promising signing turns into a success, and the club will avoid unnecessary risks.

For now, the Danish keeper faces an uncertain future as he prepares to leave Chelsea in search of the minutes he needs to get his career back on track. Newcastle, meanwhile, will quietly focus on their own plans, relieved that the transfer they missed out on in 2024 is no longer one they regret.
