Rapid transfer: ‘Close to reaching agreement’ to sign Newcastle United player

Newcastle United’s young winger Antonio Cordero looks set for another move as Deportivo de La Coruña push to bring him in when the winter transfer window opens.

What started as a small rumour in Spain has now developed quickly, with several reports claiming that Deportivo are close to reaching an agreement to take the promising Spain U19 international on loan for the second half of the season.

Cordero’s situation at Newcastle has changed rapidly over the past few months. The club signed him on a free transfer in June, viewing him as a long-term project with big potential.

To help his development, Newcastle immediately arranged a loan move to Belgian side KVC Westerlo in August. The plan was for him to gain valuable minutes at senior level, build confidence, and return stronger.

Unfortunately, things have not gone as expected. The teenager has played less than 100 minutes so far in Belgium, and the loan has offered neither the playing time nor the environment Newcastle hoped he would receive.

With so little football under his belt, Newcastle are now considering recalling him in January. The club believes he needs regular match experience to continue his growth, and sending him elsewhere for the remainder of the season seems to be the most realistic solution. This is where Deportivo de La Coruña enter the scene.

Several Spanish outlets have been following the story closely, and the latest update from El Ideal Gallego suggests Deportivo are pushing hard to sign the winger.

The report claims the club are “close to reaching an agreement” to secure Cordero on loan once the window opens. Whether that agreement is with Newcastle, with the player, or both is not completely clear, but all signs point toward the negotiations progressing quickly.

One of the key reasons this deal is moving at speed is the player’s own desire. According to sources close to Cordero, he wants to return to Spain’s Segunda División, and he believes that playing at that level will give him the best chance of recovering his rhythm and form.

Despite having received interest from several clubs, including some from La Liga, he has rejected those opportunities because they did not offer what he considers the right environment. His priority is simple: minutes on the pitch.

Deportivo, currently competing in the Segunda División, are offering exactly what he wants regular football, a competitive league, and the chance to rebuild his confidence.

The club have been working quickly behind the scenes to get this deal done, knowing that other teams could step in at any moment. Reports describe the transfer process as “rapid,” showing just how keen Deportivo are to secure his services.

For Newcastle, the move makes sense. Cordero remains a long-term investment, and ensuring his development continues smoothly is important for the club’s future plans.

Sending him somewhere he feels comfortable, somewhere he can play consistently, is essential. The Magpies will see more benefit in placing him in a stable environment rather than keeping him at Westerlo, where opportunities have been extremely limited.

As January approaches, all parties seem aligned. Newcastle want him playing regular football, Cordero wants to return to Spain and get his season back on track, and Deportivo are eager to bring in a talented young winger who can strengthen their squad.

Barring any late complications, the deal looks increasingly likely to happen.

If the move goes through, it will give Cordero the fresh start he needs and the platform to show why Newcastle brought him in over the summer.

For now, the situation continues to move quickly, and all signs point to a loan agreement being finalised soon as Deportivo push to get the deal over the line.
