Player ‘most likely’ to leave Newcastle in January and five ones to watch in 2026

As the January transfer window draws closer, the conversation around Newcastle United is beginning to shift from pure optimism to a blend of anticipation and realism. Supporters are hoping to see at least one or two smart winter arrivals who can lift the squad for what is shaping up to be a demanding second half of the 2025/26 campaign.

The fixture list has been relentless, injuries have appeared at frustrating moments, and the squad could use fresh energy in key areas.

Transfer rumours are already circulating. There has been strong interest in AZ Alkmaar’s Kees Smit, whispers of a possible move for a rising Brazilian star, and talk that adding full-back depth is high on the club’s agenda.

But while incoming signings excite fans, outgoing players are just as important, especially when it comes to managing squad size and staying within PSR limitations. Newcastle have been forced to strike this balance before, and the next window could be no different.

According to The Athletic’s Chris Waugh, Joe Willock is currently seen as the player most likely to leave in January. Willock started in the recent 2-1 victory over Burnley and produced a strong performance during the Champions League defeat to Marseille, but his contract situation is becoming increasingly important.

He is only 18 months away from the end of his deal, and there is concrete interest from Crystal Palace. Newcastle may decide that this winter is the best time to secure a meaningful fee before the club loses that leverage.

Willock has been a valuable player during his time at St James’ Park, but timing and business realities sometimes dictate decisions.

Beyond Willock, there are five other players who could become major talking points as the club looks ahead to 2026. The first is Will Osula, a young striker who appears to be heading toward a long-term exit.

He almost moved to Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer and has made it clear that he wants more consistent first-team minutes. Newcastle will only consider selling him in January if they secure another young forward, but his long-term future looks increasingly uncertain.

Then there is Sven Botman, whose situation is more delicate. Talks over a new contract are underway, and the club genuinely hopes to extend his stay.

However, The Athletic suggests that if those negotiations stall, Newcastle may have to consider cashing in before he enters the final stretch of his deal. It would be an incredibly difficult decision, given how vital he has been, but the club cannot afford to lose a player of his value for nothing.

Emil Krafth is another likely departure. His contract expires in the summer, and Copenhagen are interested in a January move. At this stage of his career, and with limited opportunities at Newcastle, a transfer feels almost inevitable.

Decisions must also be made regarding Kieran Trippier and Fabian Schar, two veteran defenders who are inching toward the final six months of their deals. Both have been exceptional servants, but the club must plan carefully as age and contract cycles collide.

While some players may be on their way out, others are firmly part of the long-term vision. Newcastle will fight hard to keep both Tino Livramento and Sandro Tonali. After the departure of Alexander Isak, the club is determined not to allow a narrative to grow that they are a selling club.

PIF want Newcastle to project ambition, stability, and a clear upward trajectory, and holding on to their brightest young assets is an essential part of that message.

As all of this unfolds, Joe Willock has also been spotted putting in extra work alongside a small group of teammates, a reminder that every player is still fully committed to the cause while their futures remain uncertain.

January is shaping up to be another defining moment for Newcastle United one that could shape both the present and the long-term direction of the club.
