Paul Scholes has heaped huge praise on Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali, claiming the Italian midfielder is even better than Arsenal’s Declan Rice.
The Manchester United legend, known for his eye for talent and deep understanding of midfield play, believes Tonali’s performances since returning from suspension have been nothing short of outstanding.
Tonali’s journey at Newcastle United has been far from straightforward. After making a big move from AC Milan, where he was already a rising star, expectations were sky-high.
His arrival was seen as another major statement from Newcastle, pairing him alongside Bruno Guimaraes to form one of the most technically gifted midfields in the Premier League.
However, his momentum was halted after he received a lengthy ban for breaching betting regulations while at Milan, forcing him to watch from the sidelines for months.
When Tonali finally returned to action in August 2024, there were questions about how quickly he could adapt and whether the long break would affect his form.

Those doubts didn’t last long. From his first game back against Nottingham Forest, Tonali looked sharp, determined, and full of energy. His vision, composure, and ability to dictate play from deep have made him an essential part of Eddie Howe’s system.
Scholes, who dominated English football for two decades with his control, passing, and intelligence, knows what it takes to excel in midfield.
Speaking about current Premier League talents, he admitted admiration for Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo but insisted he prefers midfielders who can control the game both defensively and offensively. That’s why Tonali stood out for him.
“I love Tonali at Newcastle,” Scholes said. “I was trying to think of a player who really stands out in midfield, and Tonali is that player.
He can run, he works hard, and he’s been brilliant this season. Guimaraes too has been excellent, but right now, I’d pick Tonali.”
When asked if Tonali was the best midfielder in the league, Scholes didn’t hesitate. “Yeah,” he replied, confidently.

Pressed further on whether he rated Tonali higher than Declan Rice, Scholes doubled down: “Yes, I think he’s better than Declan Rice.”
That’s high praise considering Rice’s reputation at Arsenal. Since joining from West Ham in a £100 million deal in 2023, Rice has been widely regarded as one of the best in his position.
Yet Scholes’ comments reflect the growing respect Tonali has earned for his all-around ability not just as a defensive midfielder but as a player who brings balance, creativity, and drive to Newcastle’s engine room.
Tonali’s influence extends beyond statistics. His calmness under pressure, quick transitions, and tactical awareness have transformed Newcastle’s midfield play.
He complements Guimaraes perfectly, with both players offering a blend of technical excellence and relentless work rate. The pair have become the heartbeat of a Newcastle side competing at the top end of English football once again.
With such performances, it’s no surprise that transfer rumours have started circulating. Reports from Italy suggest that Juventus are monitoring Tonali’s situation closely.
The midfielder was recently spotted in Milan with his agent Giuseppe Riso, sparking speculation about a possible return to Serie A.
Juventus reportedly tried to sign Tonali last summer but eventually abandoned their pursuit. Now, they appear interested again.
However, a move seems highly unlikely. Tonali still has over two years left on his Newcastle contract, and there’s little indication he wants to leave anytime soon.
Newcastle are in a strong position financially and competitively, and it would take a massive offer to even start negotiations. Considering that Declan Rice cost Arsenal £100 million, Newcastle’s valuation of Tonali would likely be just as high if not higher.
A return to Italy might tempt Tonali in the distant future, but for now, his focus appears firmly on Newcastle. The Magpies are building something special, and Tonali is at the centre of it.
His performances have reignited fan excitement, and his partnership with Guimaraes could define Newcastle’s midfield for years to come.
Scholes’ endorsement only adds to the growing recognition that Tonali is not just a top signing but one of the Premier League’s most complete midfielders.
His mix of intelligence, grit, and flair makes him a rare talent and if he continues on this trajectory, even comparisons with Declan Rice might soon feel modest.
