Paul Mitchell looking to strike deal with ‘committed’ star who ‘loves’ Newcastle United after transfer U-turn

Martin Dubravka has expressed his satisfaction at being back where he feels he belongs, at Newcastle United, amid ongoing discussions about his future at St. James’ Park.
Despite uncertainty over his contract, which expires this summer, Dubravka remains fully committed to the club and has played a pivotal role in its recent successes.
During the winter transfer window, a potential move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Shabab was on the table for Dubravka, but Newcastle ultimately decided against sanctioning the deal.
This decision came at a time when Dubravka had cemented his place as the club’s starting goalkeeper, helping Newcastle climb to sixth in the Premier League standings, reach the Carabao Cup final, and advance to the fifth round of the FA Cup.
Although Nick Pope returned to the starting lineup for Newcastle’s recent 3-2 win over Birmingham City, Dubravka is expected to resume his role in the upcoming clash against Manchester City.
Dubravka’s performances during this period have been nothing short of impressive. Newcastle has won 12 of the 14 matches he has started this season across all competitions, showcasing his importance to the team.
However, Pope’s recovery from injury poses a challenge to Dubravka’s starting position as the team approaches a critical juncture in the season. Despite the competition, the 36-year-old remains focused on contributing to Newcastle’s success and extending his tenure at the club.

Dubravka has consistently emphasized his commitment to Newcastle. In an interview with Sky Sports, he stated, “I am glad to be back where I belong. I’ve always been fully committed to the club, and I hope people can see that.
Newcastle is a special place for me and my family, and I want to stay here as long as I can.” Reflecting on the Al-Shabab offer, he added, “There was a specific offer on the table, and discussions started in early December, but I always left the decision to Newcastle.
My mindset was still here, and I focused on performing on the pitch. Now we’re in talks about a new contract, and if we sign the extension, I’ll be happy.”
Dubravka’s dedication to the club is evident not only in his words but also in his actions. Even when his starting spot came under threat following Nick Pope’s arrival in 2022, Dubravka remained professional and focused.
A loan spell at Manchester United provided him with valuable experience before he returned to Newcastle after just half a season. Upon his return, Dubravka demonstrated his loyalty by continuing to deliver strong performances and refusing to push for a move away.
“I love this club,” Dubravka said. “When I sat down with the club, we agreed that staying here was the best decision for both sides. The manager and Sporting Director respected that I didn’t try to force my way out. I showed my commitment, and maybe that’s why the club opened discussions about extending my contract. I’m happy to be back in the Newcastle dressing room, where I belong.”
Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe has also spoken highly of Dubravka’s attitude and contributions. Addressing the goalkeeper’s future, Howe stated, “Martin won’t leave. We’re in discussions with him about a new contract, and hopefully, we’ll reach a swift resolution. He hasn’t asked for guarantees about his place in the team—his focus has been on performing well and staying committed.”
Dubravka’s desire to remain at Newcastle stems from his deep connection to the club and its ambitions. As a veteran player in the twilight of his career, he values regular first-team football and the opportunity to continue contributing to Newcastle’s growth.
With the team on an upward trajectory under Eddie Howe’s management, Dubravka’s experience and leadership remain vital assets.
The Slovakian goalkeeper’s loyalty, professionalism, and consistent performances have earned him the respect of both the club’s management and its fans. As discussions over a new contract progress, Dubravka’s commitment to Newcastle shines through.
Whether starting between the posts or supporting his teammates, he remains dedicated to helping the club achieve its goals. For Dubravka, Newcastle United is more than just a team—it is home, and he hopes to remain a key part of its journey for as long as possible.
