‘No reason to leave’ – Newcastle United and Man Utd delivered major transfer blow as £40m man rules out move

The summer transfer window looms large, but Bayern Munich defender Kim Min-jae has thrown cold water on speculation linking him with a move away from the Bundesliga champions.
The South Korean international, who joined Bayern from Napoli in 2023, has firmly stated his desire to remain in Munich despite growing interest from Premier League clubs, including Newcastle United and Manchester United.
Speaking to SportBild, the 28-year-old center-back left little room for interpretation regarding his future: “For me, there’s no reason to leave. I hope I can stay. But we’ll see, I just want to be fit next season.”
His commitment comes at a pivotal moment for Bayern, who are on the cusp of reclaiming the Bundesliga title and will feature in the revamped Club World Cup in the United States this summer.
Kim’s stance presents a significant obstacle for Newcastle, who had identified the commanding defender as a potential solution to their defensive reinforcements. With Sven Botman as their only senior center-back under 30, the Magpies have been actively scouring the market for defensive upgrades.
Their continued interest in Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi underscores their determination to bolster their backline, but Kim’s proven pedigree at the highest level made him an attractive alternative.
The former Napoli star’s £40 million valuation and extensive experience across Europe’s top leagues—including spells in Turkey and Italy before his Bundesliga move—have made him a coveted asset. His physicality, composure in possession, and leadership qualities align perfectly with the profile of defender Eddie Howe typically favors.

However, with Kim publicly committing to Bayern, Newcastle may need to shift their focus elsewhere or prepare a substantial offer to test the German club’s resolve.
Newcastle’s broader transfer strategy faces both opportunities and challenges this summer. After three consecutive windows constrained by Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), the club finally has slightly more financial flexibility to refresh their squad.
Defensive reinforcements remain a priority, but the Magpies are also expected to pursue a right-winger and a goalkeeper. Burnley’s James Trafford and Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel have emerged as potential targets between the posts, while Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo is among the names linked to fill the void left by Miguel Almirón’s January departure.
The compressed nature of this summer’s transfer window adds another layer of complexity. Opening on June 1 before pausing briefly and resuming on June 16, the shortened timeline means clubs must act decisively.
For Newcastle, securing early signings could be crucial to integrating new players ahead of a demanding season that may include European competition.
While Kim Min-jae’s comments suggest a move is unlikely, the fluid nature of the transfer market means nothing can be entirely ruled out. Should Bayern receive an irresistible offer or the player reconsider his stance, Newcastle and other Premier League suitors may yet reignite their pursuit.
For now, however, the defender’s loyalty to Bayern leaves Newcastle exploring alternative options as they seek to build a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts.
As the summer unfolds, the Magpies’ ability to navigate these challenges—whether by convincing Kim to reconsider, pivoting to Guehi, or identifying another elite defensive target—will shape their ambitions for the 2024/25 campaign.
One thing is certain: with defensive reinforcements a necessity, Newcastle’s recruitment team faces a pivotal few weeks in the market.
