‘News to me’ – Eddie Howe stunned at what Bruno Guimaraes said after Newcastle United’s win v Athletic Club

Eddie Howe was left surprised after hearing what Bruno Guimaraes revealed following Newcastle United’s impressive 2-0 victory over Athletic Club in the Champions League.

The Brazilian midfielder, who had been battling illness, still led his team with passion and commitment, playing an hour before being substituted.

Despite not being at his physical best, Bruno’s influence on the pitch remained undeniable as Newcastle climbed to sixth in the group standings, matching points with European giants like Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, and Liverpool.

Bruno had missed training earlier in the week due to illness but insisted on starting at St. James’ Park. Lining up alongside Sandro Tonali and Joelinton, he showed grit and leadership as Newcastle set the tempo early.

Dan Burn opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a powerful header that lifted the crowd, while Joelinton doubled the lead shortly after the restart, securing another crucial European win for Eddie Howe’s men.

After the match, Guimaraes spoke candidly about the performance. He admitted that although Newcastle weren’t at their absolute best, their consistency and control were what mattered most.

“We were not at our best, but we got the result,” he said. “We started quickly, the second goal was the key moment. We could have scored more, but we controlled the game well. It’s another home win, nine points out of twelve we just need to keep going.”

The midfielder also took a moment to praise his teammate Dan Burn for his crucial contribution. “What a guy, love him,” Bruno smiled. “We joked last week about when he’d score, and he did it today.

He got the goal at a key moment. Honestly, my first thought was that he was trying to pass, but what a goal that was.” His words captured the spirit within the Newcastle dressing room a mix of humour, belief, and strong camaraderie that continues to drive their success.

Guimaraes, however, was feeling the effects of his illness as the game went on. He described how playing through sickness felt like carrying an extra weight on his back but said there was never any doubt he would play.

“For me, it was like something was holding me down with ten kilos on my back,” he admitted. “For this club, I will do everything. I started feeling ill the day before we played West Ham.”

When those comments were put to Eddie Howe, the Newcastle manager was taken aback. “He wasn’t saying that to me this morning!” Howe joked. “He told me he was feeling a million dollars. That’s news to me.”

Howe then turned serious, acknowledging Bruno’s remarkable mentality and determination. “His character is unquestionable. His will to play is so strong. We spoke before the match, and he assured me he was fit enough to deliver what the team needed. Of course, he wasn’t at 100%, which is why we took him off when we did to protect him.”

Howe also admitted that Guimaraes’ substitution affected the team’s rhythm slightly, further underlining how vital the midfielder is to Newcastle’s style of play.

“We definitely lost a bit of control when he came off, and that just shows how important he is for us,” Howe said. “Even when he’s not fully fit, he brings energy, intelligence, and leadership that lifts everyone.”

Bruno’s dedication to the badge and his bond with the supporters have made him one of the most loved figures at the club. Playing through illness only reinforced his reputation as a player who gives everything for Newcastle United.

His passion mirrors the ambition of the entire squad a group determined to prove themselves on both domestic and European stages.

Eddie Howe’s reaction highlighted the trust he places in Guimaraes and the respect the whole squad has for their Brazilian star.

Despite his physical struggle, Bruno’s influence on the game was immense, setting the tone for another strong night under the lights at St. James’ Park.

It was not just a win that strengthened Newcastle’s Champions League position, but a performance that once again showcased their resilience, unity, and the unwavering spirit that defines their climb back to Europe’s elite.
