Newcastle United youngster ruled out for two months with ankle injury – fears season could be over

Newcastle United winger Trevan Sanusi faces an extended spell on the sidelines after suffering a setback in his recovery, ruling him out for another eight weeks.

Initially expected to return much sooner, the 17-year-old has now been out of action for over a month following an ankle injury sustained shortly after his competitive debut in Newcastle’s 3-1 FA Cup third-round victory over Bromley at St James’ Park.

Despite starting in a 4-0 FA Youth Cup defeat against Aston Villa Under-18s shortly after, he has not played since, with the latest setback now pushing his potential return to the latter stages of the season.

Sanusi confirmed his situation on Instagram, expressing his frustration at being sidelined for an additional two months after already missing five weeks.

This prolonged absence raises concerns that his season may effectively be over, especially with Newcastle Under-21s’ final Premier League 2 fixture scheduled against Manchester City on April 11.

His best hope of returning before the campaign concludes depends on whether the Young Magpies secure a spot in the Premier League 2 Elimination Play-Offs.

Newcastle’s Under-18s season runs until May 3, when they host Manchester City, presenting another potential opportunity for Sanusi to make his comeback. Additionally, if he regains fitness in time, he could be in contention for a first-team call-up before the season ends.

The winger has already trained with Newcastle’s senior squad on several occasions and was part of Eddie Howe’s pre-season plans last summer, featuring in the Sela Cup matches against Girona and Stade Brest, as well as traveling with the squad to Japan.

His performances earned him praise from Howe, who has closely monitored his progress. After making his competitive debut against Bromley, Howe highlighted Sanusi’s confidence, particularly in one-on-one situations, and his ability to take on defenders with ease.

However, he also pointed out areas for improvement, including physicality and end product, which remain key aspects of his development.

Despite the challenges he faces, the timing of Sanusi’s injury is particularly frustrating given Newcastle’s recent struggles with squad depth in attack. The club parted ways with Miguel Almirón in the January transfer window and has also been without Harvey Barnes due to injury, while Anthony Gordon now serves a suspension.

Had Sanusi remained fit, he may have been in line for further first-team opportunities, particularly given the shortage of available wingers.

With Barnes returning to fitness, he is expected to fill Gordon’s void in the starting XI, but Sanusi’s absence continues to limit Howe’s options. The young winger’s development remains a priority for Newcastle, and while this injury has disrupted his momentum, the club remains optimistic about his long-term potential.

As he works toward recovery, the focus will be on regaining full match sharpness, ensuring that when he returns, he is ready to compete at the highest level.
