Newcastle United want to sign Man City star in winter transfer window, he wants to leave

Newcastle United are preparing for another busy winter window, and one name that has returned to the top of their list is Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford. According to reports from the Daily Mail, Newcastle want to bring the young English keeper to St. James’ Park after missing out on him in the summer.

They had pushed hard to sign him a few months ago, but City stepped in and used a matching rights clause to secure the deal at the last moment. That decision frustrated Newcastle, especially because they believed Trafford was a player who could grow with the club. Now, his situation at City has opened the door for them to try again.

Trafford joined Manchester City with the promise of becoming their first-choice goalkeeper this season. He had left Burnley with big expectations, excited about the idea that he could challenge for the England No.1 shirt.

However, things changed on the final day of the transfer window when City unexpectedly signed Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain. The Italian goalkeeper walked straight into the starting lineup and has not missed a Premier League game since arriving.

Trafford has been left on the bench, frustrated and unsure of his future. Since Donnarumma came in, Trafford has played only three times, far fewer than he hoped for at this stage of his career.

At 23, he wants to play regularly, and Newcastle are paying close attention. They know he is ambitious, talented, and eager to prove himself at a high level.

Newcastle already brought in Aaron Ramsdale on loan from Southampton, and many fans expect the English keeper to get more minutes soon, especially after debates about whether Nick Pope should be dropped following a string of mistakes.

Even with Pope and Ramsdale in the squad, Eddie Howe has not stopped admiring Trafford. The Newcastle manager appreciates Trafford’s style of play, especially his ability to pass with confidence and build attacks from the back. It is one of the reasons Newcastle were so keen on him in the summer.

Signing Trafford in the winter would give Howe more options, but it also raises questions about the current goalkeeping situation. Ramsdale is experienced and hungry to prove himself after a difficult spell at Arsenal, while Pope has been a reliable figure despite his recent issues.

Trafford would not walk straight into the starting eleven, and he knows that. But he may still prefer Newcastle over sitting on the bench behind Donnarumma for the rest of the season.

The Magpies can at least offer him a clearer path to eventually becoming first choice if he performs well.

Even with their interest in Trafford, Newcastle have more pressing needs elsewhere in the squad. They have suffered injuries and inconsistency this season, and the winter window offers them a chance to rebuild for a stronger second half.

The club need to think wisely about where to invest their money. A new goalkeeper is important, but not essential compared to the gaps they must fill in midfield and attack.

Newcastle are also trying to sign AZ Alkmaar midfielder Kees Smit, a talented young Dutch player who has impressed with his creativity and vision. If they manage to complete that signing, they may decide to part ways with Joe Willock.

Crystal Palace are interested in Willock and could make a move if Newcastle give the green light. The Magpies understand that selling some players may be necessary to bring in reinforcements capable of lifting the team’s level.

In attack, Newcastle may also need new options. William Osula is reportedly close to leaving after reaching a verbal agreement with Eintracht Frankfurt.

If he departs, the club will be short in the forward positions at a time when they desperately need depth. One or two new attackers could make a huge difference in the second half of the campaign.

The interest in Trafford shows that Newcastle are looking not just at immediate needs but also long-term potential. He is young, talented, and eager to play.

The question is whether the winter window is the right time to bring him in, especially when other areas of the squad require more urgent attention. The club must balance ambition with smart decision-making, something that will define how the rest of their season unfolds.
