Newcastle United co-owner issues 35-word message after Marseille defeat

Newcastle United co-owner Jamie Reuben has shared a short but heartfelt message after the defeat to Marseille, speaking directly to the fans who made the difficult trip to France. It was another frustrating night for Eddie Howe’s team, who started brightly through a well-taken early goal from Harvey Barnes but could not hold on.

Just after half-time, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang struck twice in quick succession, turning the match on its head and handing Newcastle their fourth straight defeat away from home.

The result was disappointing enough, but many Newcastle supporters had also endured a long and difficult journey to get to the game. Acknowledging that reality, Reuben took to social media to show appreciation for their loyalty.

In his message, he admitted that neither the result nor the travel experience was what fans deserved, but he wanted to personally thank every supporter who made the effort. Above all, he wished them a safe journey home after a night that offered little reward for their dedication.

Reuben’s words echoed the feelings within the dressing room, where captain Bruno Guimaraes also made sure to highlight the support from the stands. After the match, the Brazilian midfielder spoke with honesty about the team’s performance and how they let another lead slip away.

He admitted Newcastle cannot afford to play one strong half and then lose control in the next. While he felt the first half was positive and filled with moments of good possession and attacking intent, the lack of clinical finishing once again proved costly.

Missing the chance to score a second goal became the turning point of the match, especially given how quickly Marseille punished them at the start of the second half.

Guimaraes reflected on the way the team came out after the break, calling it disappointing and difficult to understand.

For him, the manner in which they restarted the game was the most painful part because it undid all the solid work from the opening 45 minutes.

He said that if Newcastle had taken one more of their chances and gone 2-0 up, the entire match would likely have swung in their favour, but football can be unforgiving when opportunities go to waste.

Despite the defeat, Guimaraes was full of admiration for the fans who travelled. He described the atmosphere as incredible and said the supporters never stopped backing the team, even as the scoreline turned against them.

He admitted it was tough to face those fans after such a result, but he hoped they understood how much the players value their support.

Looking ahead, Guimaraes stressed that Newcastle will have another chance to correct their away form in the Premier League on Saturday. He urged the team to learn from the mistakes in Marseille, tighten up their focus, and make sure they start both halves with the same level of intensity.

For him, the message was simple: stay together, improve quickly, and give the supporters something to be proud of again.

Reuben’s appreciation and Guimaraes’ honesty show a club that recognises its fans deserve better. Now, the challenge is to respond with results.
