Newcastle United are now considering a transfer move that makes absolutely no sense

While Newcastle United has yet to secure any major signings, the summer transfer window has been anything but quiet. The Magpies have already added three new players to their roster while selling Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to avoid a potential points deduction.

The Profitability and Sustainability Regulations (PSR) situation led to a dramatic end of June for Newcastle United. However, things have since calmed down on Tyneside.

New signings Lloyd Kelly, Odysseas Vlachodimos, and John Ruddy are now integrating with their new teammates as they prepare for the upcoming season under Eddie Howe’s guidance.

Out of the three new signings, two are goalkeepers, which came as a surprise to many fans and analysts. John Ruddy joined on a free transfer, bringing valuable experience to the team, while Odysseas Vlachodimos was signed to compete with current first-choice keeper Nick Pope.

Vlachodimos’s transfer was particularly unexpected, especially since Newcastle had been pursuing Burnley’s James Trafford. Although personal terms had been agreed with Trafford, the Magpies ultimately chose to bring in Vlachodimos and Ruddy.

The acquisition of Vlachodimos was indirectly linked to Elliot Anderson’s move to Nottingham Forest. Initially, Newcastle seemed set to sign Trafford, but the deal stalled after the arrivals of Vlachodimos and Ruddy.

This situation leaves the possibility of further changes in Newcastle’s goalkeeping lineup.

According to The Athletic, Newcastle United is contemplating the addition of yet another goalkeeper during this transfer window.

The club currently has five goalkeepers on its books: Nick Pope, Odysseas Vlachodimos, John Ruddy, Martin Dubravka, and Mark Gillespie. However, one of these keepers, Dubravka, appears likely to depart St James’ Park as he enters the final year of his contract.

Even if Dubravka leaves, it would be surprising for Newcastle to sign another goalkeeper. The team already has a surplus of senior goalkeepers.

With Vlachodimos expected to serve as Pope’s understudy, adding another keeper seems unnecessary. Newcastle is well-stocked in this position, unless they plan to bring in a new number one and move Pope out, which would be an astonishing move.

Considering the depth of their goalkeeping department, Newcastle should focus on other pressing issues in the transfer market. Strengthening other areas of the squad would be a more strategic use of resources.

The unexpected arrival of Vlachodimos should provide enough competition for Pope, ensuring that the club has solid options between the sticks.

Newcastle United’s summer transfer activities have been characterized by strategic decisions and surprising moves. The arrival of new goalkeepers and the sale of key players like Elliot Anderson reflect the club’s efforts to navigate financial regulations and strengthen the squad.

As the transfer window progresses, Newcastle will likely continue to make calculated decisions to bolster their team, aiming to improve their performance in the upcoming Premier League season. The focus should now shift to addressing other critical areas to ensure a well-rounded and competitive squad.
