Newcastle make decision on paying asking price for £25M EPL striker

The final days of the summer transfer window are a tense and complicated time for every football club, and Newcastle United is right in the middle of it all.

The club is working hard to strengthen its squad, especially in the striker position, but finding the right player at the right price is proving to be a real challenge.

One name that has been strongly linked with a move to St. James’ Park is Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Jorgen Strand Larsen.

However, what initially looked like a promising possibility now appears to be fading quickly due to a major gap in valuation between the two clubs.

Newcastle’s interest in the Norwegian striker is easy to understand. After an impressive debut season in English football, Strand Larsen has shown he can score goals in the Premier League.

He found the net 14 times and provided four assists in 35 league appearances for Wolves, a more than respectable return for a player adapting to a new league.

That kind of productivity naturally attracts attention, and Newcastle, who are eager to add more firepower to their attack, took notice.

The Magpies have already tested the waters with a formal bid. They offered Wolves £50 million for the player, which would have given the Midlands club a 100% profit on the £25 million they paid to make his loan move from Celta Vigo permanent just this summer.

It was a strong opening offer and a clear signal of serious intent. However, Wolves swiftly rejected it. The message from Wolverhampton was firm: they are not actively looking to sell their player, and if they were to even consider it, the price would have to be much, much higher—reportedly in the region of £70 million.

This is where the deal seems to have hit a wall. From Newcastle’s perspective, paying £70 million for a player who was signed for £25 million only weeks ago feels unrealistic, no matter how talented he may be.

While the club is prepared to invest in quality, they also have to be sensible and responsible with their resources. Meeting such a high demand would set a risky precedent and could limit their ability to make other needed signings.

For Wolves, the situation is different. The striker has become a key part of manager Vitor Pereira’s plans, and with his contract running until 2029, the club holds all the negotiating power.

They are under no financial pressure to sell, and unless a truly exceptional offer arrives, they are content to keep him.

As things stand, Newcastle is unlikely to return with an improved bid. The club’s leadership believes the asking price is simply too high and does not reflect realistic market value.

Instead, they are expected to turn their attention to other targets. With the transfer deadline moving closer every hour, the pressure is building.

The need for a striker remains urgent, but it is clear that Jorgen Strand Larsen will not be the solution unless there is a dramatic change in Wolves’ position. For now, Newcastle must continue its search elsewhere, hoping to find a more achievable deal before the window closes.
