‘From What I Hear’ Expert: Newcastle to give star player playing time guarantees to lure him

Newcastle United have set their sights on Chelsea winger Noni Madueke as they look to bolster their attacking options this summer.
The Magpies’ interest comes after their £45 million bid for Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga was rejected, forcing them to explore alternative targets.
According to Mick Brown, a former chief scout for Manchester United and Sunderland with extensive connections in football, the 23-year-old Madueke is open to a move to St James’ Park in search of regular playing time.
Madueke’s future at Chelsea appears uncertain, with new manager Enzo Maresca reportedly unconvinced about the young winger’s attitude and long-term fit at Stamford Bridge.
Despite his undeniable talent, Madueke has struggled to secure a consistent starting role in a squad packed with attacking options. With Chelsea continuing to reinforce their forward line, his opportunities could become even more limited, making a transfer increasingly likely.
Brown, who spent over a decade scouting top-tier talent during Manchester United’s most successful era, believes Madueke is at a critical stage in his career where first-team football is essential—especially with the World Cup on the horizon.

“Madueke is going to be one to watch this summer,” Brown told Football Insider. “He’s reached a point where he needs to play week in, week out if he wants to maintain his place in the England setup. Uncertainty over his minutes at Chelsea won’t do him any favors, either at club level or internationally. The competition there is fierce—he could start one game and then find himself benched for the next three. Newcastle, however, could offer him a guaranteed starting role on the right flank. If that kind of opportunity comes his way, he’ll take it.”
Newcastle’s pursuit of Madueke isn’t without competition. Tottenham Hotspur, who could leverage the advantage of keeping him in London, are also monitoring the situation closely.
Aston Villa have also been linked, meaning the Magpies may need to act decisively if they want to secure his signature.
Striker Search Continues as Calvert-Lewin Emerges as Option
While reinforcing the wings remains a priority, Newcastle are also in the market for a new striker following Callum Wilson’s departure. Dominic Calvert-Lewin, recently released by Everton, has emerged as a potential target.
The 27-year-old is now a free agent, attracting interest from several Premier League clubs, including Fulham, as well as teams abroad.
However, concerns over Calvert-Lewin’s injury record could complicate any potential deal. Brown has suggested that Newcastle might hesitate to commit to the striker due to his inconsistent fitness levels in recent seasons.
“Calvert-Lewin is a proven Premier League goalscorer, but his injury history is a red flag,” Brown explained. “Newcastle need reliability up front, and if they aren’t convinced he can stay fit, they may look elsewhere.”
With the transfer window in full swing, Newcastle’s recruitment strategy is taking shape. Missing out on Elanga has forced them to reassess their options, and Madueke presents an exciting alternative.
His pace, dribbling ability, and eye for goal could add a new dimension to Eddie Howe’s attack.
At the same time, the club must weigh the risks and rewards of pursuing Calvert-Lewin. A fit and firing Calvert-Lewin would be a valuable asset, but his fitness concerns make him a gamble.
As the weeks progress, Newcastle’s moves in the market will reveal their ambition. Securing Madueke would signal their intent to compete at the highest level, while a calculated gamble on Calvert-Lewin could either pay off handsomely or backfire.
One thing is certain—the Magpies are determined to strengthen their squad as they aim for another strong campaign in the Premier League and beyond.
