Speaking to Football Insider, Wyness revealed that Gordon has a “desire” to make the move and that Liverpool remain interested in him after previously tracking him in earlier windows.
Even though Gordon has faced criticism for his performances at Newcastle this season, his importance to Howe’s side since his arrival from Everton in 2023 cannot be ignored.
He has grown into a player the team often relies on for energy, directness, and creativity, making any potential move a serious blow to Newcastle’s long-term plans.
Wyness believes Gordon is one of the top names Liverpool are considering as Salah’s successor, and he is not alone. Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo and Bayern Munich star Michael Olise are also listed among the club’s primary targets.
However, Wyness feels the real battle is between Semenyo and Gordon, two dynamic wide attackers who offer pace, power, and the ability to influence big moments in matches.
Liverpool know they cannot replace Salah like-for-like, but they also understand the importance of signing someone capable of stepping into a high-pressure environment and delivering immediately.
On Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness shared that Semenyo is the first clear contender, calling him one of the three players Liverpool admire most.
His rise at Bournemouth has caught the attention of several top clubs, and his physical style fits the Premier League perfectly. Yet Wyness also stressed that people should not forget the previous links between Gordon and Liverpool, insisting that the conversations around the winger were not just random speculation. For him, it is clear Gordon remains firmly in Liverpool’s thinking.
Wyness explained that the idea of Gordon playing for Liverpool isn’t as far-fetched as some supporters might think. Although few players cross the divide between Everton and Liverpool, he believes Gordon has already made his feelings known.
His desire to return to Merseyside, even as a former Everton player, could become a major factor if Liverpool make a formal move. Wyness also mentioned that Gordon would not be the first player to make such a switch, even if the reaction from fans might be complicated.
The winger has matured significantly since leaving Everton, proving he can handle pressure, and that could work in his favour if Liverpool decide he is the right fit to follow in Salah’s footsteps.
As for Semenyo, Wyness views him as an equally strong candidate. His development has been impressive, and he continues to show signs of being ready for the next level. Liverpool value players who bring intensity and forward drive, and the Bournemouth attacker seems to offer exactly that.
Michael Olise, meanwhile, is another name Liverpool hold in high regard, but Wyness places him slightly behind the other two options, perhaps because of concerns over his injury record or the difficulty of negotiating with Bayern Munich.
What makes the situation even more interesting is how it affects Newcastle. Losing Gordon at this stage of their project would be a major setback. Howe has relied heavily on him, especially in matches where Newcastle struggle to break down compact defences.
