Getting that first win of the season always brings a special feeling of relief and optimism, and for Newcastle United, that moment arrived this past Saturday.

A hard-fought 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at a buzzing St James’ Park provided a massive boost for everyone connected with the club.

The winning goal, a well-taken header from debutant Nick Woltemade, was the perfect way to cap off a performance that showed both grit and promise.

As the final whistle blew, the focus could immediately shift to an even bigger occasion: the start of the UEFA Champions League campaign with a blockbuster home match against Spanish giants Barcelona.

Manager Eddie Howe knows that navigating a season with European football requires more than just a strong starting eleven; it demands a full and capable squad, where every player is ready to contribute when called upon.

This need for depth has led to a small but significant change for one particular player, highlighting his growing importance to the team.

Earlier this week, the club submitted its official 25-man squad list to the Premier League, a necessary administrative step that outlines which senior players are eligible to play in the league until the next registration period.

Included on that list was the name of young striker William Osula. While this might seem like a simple formality, it actually represents a meaningful step up in his career at Newcastle.

Last season, Osula was classified as an under-21 player, which meant he did not need to be included in the main 25-man squad to be eligible to play.

His age allowed him to be a bonus option, not taking up a valuable senior spot.

However, that has now changed. Due to Premier League rules, a player is no longer eligible for the under-21 list if they were born before January 1st, 2004.

Having reached that age threshold, Osula has now officially graduated into the senior squad. By naming him in the main 25-man list, the club and Eddie Howe have effectively handed him a new role and responsibility.

It is a clear sign of faith, showing that he is now viewed as a fully-fledged part of the first-team picture, ready to compete for minutes alongside the other established senior players.

This promotion is a testament to the progress Osula has made and the impression he has clearly left on the manager.

Despite the big-money arrival of other attacking players, Howe has shown a willingness to trust the young forward.

He has given Osula minutes in all four of Newcastle’s Premier League matches so far this season, even awarding him a start in the match against Leeds United before the international break.

His commitment was rewarded when Osula scored his first goal of the campaign in the thrilling 3-2 defeat to Liverpool last month.

For William Osula, this is more than just paperwork. It is a symbol of his development and a signal that the coaching staff believes he has what it takes to help the team in what will be a long and demanding season.

As Newcastle United prepares to battle on multiple fronts, having reliable and hungry players like Osula ready to step in could make all the difference. His new role within the senior squad is a challenge, but it’s one he has undoubtedly earned.
