Defender spotted at Man Utd after Newcastle United contract decision – set to become free agent in January

Paul Dummett made a return to familiar territory as he watched Newcastle United secure a 2-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Monday.

The 33-year-old defender, who parted ways with Newcastle United in the summer after more than 200 appearances for his boyhood club, joined the away supporters in celebrating a fifth consecutive win for Eddie Howe’s side. Goals from Alexander Isak and Joelinton sealed the victory, showcasing the team’s impressive form.

Since leaving Newcastle, Dummett signed a short-term deal with League One club Wigan Athletic in November as a free agent. However, his time at Wigan has been far from ideal, with limited first-team opportunities.

To date, he has made only three substitute appearances in League One and has not featured in the last four matchday squads. His current contract with Wigan is set to expire in January, raising the possibility of him becoming a free agent once again in 2025.

Reflecting on his move to Wigan, Dummett explained his decision during an interview. He expressed excitement about the opportunity, stating, “When I got the call, it was a no-brainer for me to want to come down here and play.

It’s been a weird summer for me, being at Newcastle for so many years, and it’s been strange being without a club. When I came down, I did have some other offers, but I knew it was the decision I wanted to make, and I wanted to sign for Wigan.”

Following his release from Newcastle, Dummett was granted access to continue his fitness training at the club’s facilities while he explored his options for a new team.

Despite stepping away from his playing career at St. James’ Park, his deep-rooted passion for Newcastle remains evident. Throughout the season, he has attended several of the team’s matches as a loyal supporter, with the victory at Old Trafford standing out as a memorable moment.

Dummett’s enduring connection to Newcastle United underscores his bond with the club where he spent the majority of his career.

While his time at Wigan may not have unfolded as expected, his commitment to maintaining his fitness and supporting Newcastle shows his unwavering dedication to football and the team he holds dear.

With his contract at Wigan nearing its conclusion, it remains to be seen what the future holds for the experienced defender as he navigates the next chapter of his career.
