Putting together a consistent starting lineup has been a bit of a puzzle for Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe in these early weeks of the season.
Just when it seems like he might find the right combination, something happens to change the plan. The campaign began with a challenge right at the start, as the team was without their main striker, forcing Howe to use other players in that central role. Then, in the second game of the season, came another setback that has had a lasting impact.
During the match against Liverpool, attacker Anthony Gordon was shown a straight red card for a dangerous challenge.
This meant he received an automatic three-match suspension, ruling him out of important Premier League games against Leeds, Wolves, and Bournemouth.
While he was able to play in the Champions League match against Barcelona and the recent Carabao Cup win over Bradford, his absence in the league has been felt. A team loses a key part of its identity when a player of Gordon’s energy and quality is missing.
Now, the waiting period is over. Gordon’s suspension has been served, and he is available for selection for this Sunday’s big match against Arsenal at St. James’ Park.
For Eddie Howe, this is very welcome news. Speaking to the press, the manager didn’t hide his excitement, calling Gordon’s return a “big boost” for the squad.

He pointed out that the player now has a clear run of games to focus on before the next international break and praised his excellent performance in the cup match.
Most importantly, Howe highlighted a key trait of Gordon’s, saying he is “a player that rises to the occasion.” In a high-pressure game against a top opponent like Arsenal, that kind of character is invaluable.
With Gordon back, Howe finally has the opportunity to field what many believe will become the team’s first-choice front three. We could see Anthony Gordon on the left, new signing Nick Woltemade through the middle, and Anthony Elanga on the right.
This would be the first time this particular trio has started a Premier League game together, offering a glimpse of the attacking future Howe is building.
However, the decision isn’t entirely straightforward. Another player, Jacob Murphy, has also been pushing hard for a starting spot.
While Elanga has impressed with his incredible speed and work rate, Murphy has arguably been more effective in terms of final product, already contributing assists this season.
This situation creates what managers often call a “good headache.” Instead of worrying about a lack of options, Eddie Howe now has to make a difficult choice between two talented players for the right-wing position.
It’s a sign of the improving depth within the squad. Similarly, on the left side, he has both Gordon and Harvey Barnes to consider, though Gordon’s form and style likely make him the favorite for such a crucial game.
After a period of having to make changes out of necessity, Howe now has the pleasant task of selecting from a position of strength.
The return of Anthony Gordon doesn’t just add one good player back into the mix; it restores balance and provides a major spark, giving Newcastle a much better chance to take on the might of Arsenal.
