Newcastle United agree six-figure deal for defender – set to sign become fifth summer signing

Newcastle United are on the brink of completing the signing of 19-year-old Serbian defender Miodrag Pivas. The versatile centre-back, who can also operate as a defensive midfielder, was recently seen at St James’ Park, signaling the final stages of his transfer from FK Jedinstvo Ub, a club in the Serbian Superliga.

According to Mozzart Sport, Newcastle United have agreed to an €800,000 fee for Pivas, which includes a 20% future sell-on clause. The young defender has reportedly signed a five-year contract with the Magpies. However, Pivas will spend the upcoming season on loan, likely in the Netherlands or Belgium, to gain valuable playing experience.

Last season, Pivas made 25 senior appearances, showcasing his talent and earning recognition at the youth international level for Serbia. His potential has not gone unnoticed by former Chelsea and Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic, who has compared Pivas to Serbian legends Nemanja Vidic and Branislav Ivanovic.

“A huge talent and serious potential,” Matic praised. “If he continues this way, he’s on the path to the national team. In my opinion, we haven’t seen a player with such predispositions since Nemanja Vidic and Branislav Ivanovic. A complete player and a top professional.”

Despite the high praise, Pivas has remained grounded. “I didn’t know what came over me when I read that,” he admitted. “It took me time to accept those words and process them properly, to keep my composure, and I believe that I didn’t rise. Thanks to Nemanja for thinking that way, his advice is aimed at always giving my best. I never spare my opponents. I get more direct advice from coach Radovanović.”

Pivas will become Newcastle’s fifth summer signing, joining the ranks alongside Lewis Hall, Lloyd Kelly, Odysseas Vlachodimos, and John Ruddy, who all arrived on July 1. The addition of Pivas reflects the club’s strategy to bolster their squad with promising young talent.

Newcastle United’s active presence in the transfer market underscores their ambition to build a competitive team capable of challenging in both domestic and European competitions. The Magpies have shown intent by securing talents like Pivas, indicating a focus on long-term success and development.

Pivas’ loan spell will be crucial for his development, allowing him to gain the necessary experience and hone his skills. Playing in competitive leagues in the Netherlands or Belgium will provide him with the platform to mature as a player and adapt to different styles of football.

Miodrag Pivas is a promising young talent with the potential to become a key player for Newcastle United in the future. His versatility, defensive skills, and professional attitude make him a valuable asset.

The comparison to Vidic and Ivanovic, while flattering, sets high expectations for the youngster. However, with the right guidance and experience, Pivas has the potential to live up to these comparisons and make a significant impact.
