Newcastle United can sign Harvey Elliott for cut-price transfer fee from Liverpool – on one condition

Newcastle United have been presented with a surprising opportunity to sign Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott this summer, but any potential deal comes with an interesting twist.
According to reports, the Reds would demand over £50 million for the young midfielder, but they might accept a reduced fee of around £40 million if Newcastle agree to include a buy-back clause in the transfer.
Elliott, who started just two Premier League games last season (both after Liverpool had already secured the title), is reportedly open to leaving Anfield in search of regular first-team football.
Champions League football would be a key factor in his decision, putting Newcastle in a strong position to lure him to St. James’ Park. However, they face competition from Bundesliga sides Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig, both of whom have shown interest in the 21-year-old.
Why Elliott Makes Sense for Newcastle
Elliott’s versatility is one of his biggest assets—he can operate as an advanced midfielder, a winger, or even in a deeper role. This adaptability would give Eddie Howe valuable options in midfield and attack, particularly in a season where fixture congestion will be a major challenge.
That said, midfield reinforcements are not currently at the top of Newcastle’s summer shopping list. The club’s immediate priorities include signing a right-winger, a striker, a centre-back, and a goalkeeper.

With Bruno Guimarães, Sandro Tonali, and Joelinton firmly established as first-choice midfielders, Elliott would face stiff competition for minutes.
However, the futures of Joe Willock and Sean Longstaff remain uncertain, meaning Newcastle could soon find themselves needing reinforcements in the middle of the park.
Newcastle have already been active in the market, though not all their efforts have been successful. They are currently in talks with Burnley over a deal for goalkeeper James Trafford, while their £45 million bid for Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga was rejected. The club is considering whether to return with an improved offer.
Their pursuit of a new forward took a hit when João Pedro opted to join Chelsea in a deal worth up to £60 million. The Brazilian’s decision leaves Newcastle still searching for an alternative to Alexander Isak, especially with Callum Wilson now officially departing as a free agent.
Interestingly, Liverpool have been linked with a move for Isak, though Newcastle have made it clear the Swedish striker is not for sale. Any suggestion of Elliott being used as a makeweight in a potential deal has been dismissed, with both clubs now assessing their next moves in the market.
The Verdict: Should Newcastle Push for Elliott?
At £40 million with a buy-back clause, Elliott represents an intriguing opportunity. His technical quality, creativity, and Premier League experience make him an attractive option, particularly given his age and room for development.
However, Newcastle must weigh whether he fits their immediate needs—especially when other areas of the squad require more urgent attention.
If the club can secure their primary targets first, Elliott could be a smart long-term addition. But if midfield isn’t deemed a priority right now, they may be better off focusing their resources elsewhere. Either way, his potential availability is a storyline worth watching as the transfer window unfolds.
For now, Newcastle’s focus remains on strengthening key positions before considering any potential midfield reinforcements. But if Elliott remains on the market later in the window, don’t be surprised to see the Magpies revisit the possibility—especially if Liverpool remain open to a structured deal.
