‘Soon’ – Fabrizio Romano highlight Newcastle United’s first summer signing as personal terms agreed

The summer transfer window continues to heat up as Newcastle United push to finalize their long-awaited move for Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford.

According to renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Magpies are working to accelerate negotiations and hope to wrap up the deal soon.

This comes after a failed attempt to sign the 22-year-old last summer, when complications involving Nottingham Forest and goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos derailed the transfer.

Despite that setback, Trafford remained at Burnley and enjoyed a stellar season, keeping an impressive 29 clean sheets while conceding just 16 goals as the Clarets secured an immediate return to the Premier League.

His performances have only heightened Newcastle’s interest, though his price tag has nearly doubled from last year’s £20 million valuation to around £40 million.

Newcastle’s renewed pursuit suggests they view Trafford as a key addition to Eddie Howe’s squad. Romano’s latest update indicates that talks between the clubs are progressing, with a deal expected to gain momentum once the July transfer window officially opens.

The Italian journalist previously reported that personal terms had already been agreed upon last summer, and those arrangements reportedly remain in place.

Trafford himself has openly acknowledged his desire to join Newcastle, admitting in a recent interview that he saw the move as the right fit for his career.

While he had no reservations about playing in the Championship, he recognized the opportunity at St. James’ Park as one worth pursuing. His comments suggest he remains keen on the switch, provided the clubs can finalize an agreement.

Meanwhile, Burnley appear to be preparing for life without their first-choice keeper. The recent signing of German shot-stopper Max Weiss from Karlsruher SC on a four-year deal hints at their expectation that Trafford will depart.

Weiss, who has been described as a potential long-term No. 1, could step in immediately if Newcastle’s bid succeeds.

For Newcastle, securing Trafford would address a crucial position as they look to build on last season’s successes.
