£20M Newcastle player is open to leaving now, 2 PL clubs making move

Callum Wilson currently finds himself in a challenging situation at Newcastle United. Over the summer, it seemed likely that the 32-year-old would leave the club, with reports suggesting that the Magpies were planning to move him on.

However, those plans changed when Wilson suffered a back injury, derailing any immediate transfer talks. The arrival of Will Osula was meant to complement Newcastle’s attacking options, allowing Wilson to focus on his rehabilitation.

Wilson’s recovery is still ongoing, and he has yet to make his return to the squad. His absence continues to be a concern, with head coach Eddie Howe stating that Wilson is expected to come back after the next international break.

This extended time on the sidelines has only added to the frustration surrounding his fitness issues. Along with these challenges, Wilson’s contract situation at St James’ Park looms over his future. His current deal expires in 2025, which means he could leave the club on a free transfer next summer if no new contract is offered.

With Wilson entering the final year of his contract, there’s a real chance that a Premier League club might try to secure his services at a bargain price in the upcoming January transfer window.

If Newcastle doesn’t intend to offer him a new deal, selling him in January would make financial sense, rather than letting him leave for free in the summer of 2025.

According to reports, clubs like Fulham and Brentford are already showing interest in Wilson’s availability. The Sun has suggested that Brentford, in particular, views Wilson as a potential replacement for Ivan Toney, who transferred to Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia during the last window.

Given his proven goalscoring ability, it’s no surprise that Wilson is attracting attention from other Premier League clubs. At £20 million, Wilson represents solid value for a club looking for an experienced striker.

The Sun further claims that Wilson is open to a move away from Newcastle, which aligns with earlier reports that he had been keen on a fresh challenge during the summer.

While a departure for Wilson might make sense for both parties, it would increase the pressure on Newcastle’s young striker, Will Osula. Osula, at just 21 years old, was brought in to provide additional cover for Alexander Isak and Wilson, with the hope that he might eventually replace Wilson as the backup option.

However, that transition may be happening sooner than expected. Osula remains a project player, and while he has shown promise since his arrival from Sheffield United, he has only made one appearance for the Toon so far.

If Wilson leaves, Osula will face significant expectations to step up as Isak’s main understudy. At this point in his career, the young forward is still developing and has yet to score a Premier League goal.

Eddie Howe seems pleased with Osula’s progress, but thrusting him into a more prominent role could be a daunting challenge for the inexperienced player.

For now, Wilson’s situation remains uncertain. His injury, contract status, and the possibility of a January transfer all contribute to the ongoing speculation. Newcastle will need to carefully assess whether they want to keep the striker or cash in on him before his contract runs out.

Meanwhile, Osula will continue to develop under Howe’s guidance, but if Wilson departs, the pressure will be on the young forward to fill the void sooner than planned.
