Manchester United snubbed as ‘verbal agreement’ reached with former Newcastle United forward
Shola Shoretire, a former Newcastle United academy player, is on the verge of signing with Greek club PAOK after rejecting a new contract offer from Manchester United. This decision marks a significant step in the 20-year-old’s career, as he seeks new opportunities and greater playing time.
Shola Shoretire, born and raised in the North East, began his football journey with local junior teams such as Wallsend Boys Club, Hebburn Town, and Newcastle City Juniors.
His family later moved to Manchester, where Shoretire joined Manchester United’s academy a decade ago. His talent quickly became evident, and he made his senior debut against Newcastle United in a Premier League match in February 2021.
Despite this promising start, Shoretire has made only four additional senior appearances since then, with his last outing occurring over two years ago.
Earlier this month, our sister title ManchesterWorld reported that Manchester United were keen to retain Shoretire. However, the young forward decided it was time to move on and explore new opportunities. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the news, stating that Shoretire is set to join PAOK.
Romano posted on X, “Greek side PAOK have reached a verbal agreement to sign former Man United talent Shola Shoretire. Despite interest from England, Spain, MLS, and Saudi clubs, Shoretire is now expected to travel and sign next week. Shoretire, available as a free agent after leaving #MUFC.”
Shoretire’s roots in Newcastle have always been a significant part of his identity. He grew up idolizing Newcastle legend Alan Shearer, even though he was just two years old when Shearer retired.
Reflecting on his time in Newcastle, Shoretire said, “I was very young when I was in Newcastle. But the people that I looked up to were my favourite players, Lionel Messi and Ronaldinho. I think I have tried to make my game like theirs, quite technical and a good all-round player. But then I think, playing for Newcastle, a bit before my time, but Alan Shearer. He is the legend up there in Newcastle for what he’s done for the club. Hearing his stories and the history of the club, that is what got me into playing football in Newcastle.”
It was perhaps poetic that Shoretire’s senior debut came against his boyhood club. Recalling the experience, Shoretire said, “It was an unbelievable feeling. Sitting on the bench and just being part of the squad. Then when I was called to come onto the pitch, nothing going through my head. I didn’t know what to think. To get my first game against Newcastle, it meant a lot to me because of the journey I have had from Newcastle to Manchester. To be playing against them was really good.”
As Shoretire prepares to embark on this new chapter with PAOK, he carries with him the lessons and experiences from his time at Manchester United and his early days in Newcastle.
Joining PAOK represents a fresh start and an opportunity to showcase his talent on a new stage. The Greek side will benefit from his skills and potential, while Shoretire will look to establish himself as a key player in their squad.
Shola Shoretire’s journey from Newcastle’s junior setups to Manchester United’s academy, and now to PAOK, highlights his determination and ambition. While his time at Manchester United provided a foundation, his move to PAOK offers the promise of regular first-team football and the chance to continue his development.
As he takes this next step, Shoretire’s story serves as an inspiration to young players, demonstrating that with talent and perseverance, new opportunities are always within reach.
