Manchester United’s fee for Dan Ashworth ‘nowhere near’ Newcastle valuation

Manchester United’s new sporting director, Dan Ashworth, has quickly begun his tenure at Old Trafford following his arrival at the beginning of the month. This move marks a significant step in the club’s efforts to strengthen both its playing squad and its management team.

Reports indicate that Manchester United successfully negotiated a cut-price deal to secure Ashworth from Newcastle United before his gardening leave concluded.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who acquired a minority stake in the club earlier this year, prioritized enhancing the club’s boardroom, with Ashworth at the top of his list. Known for his impressive reputation in football management, Ashworth’s addition was seen as a crucial move for the Red Devils.

In February, Ashworth expressed his intention to join Manchester United, leading Newcastle to place him on gardening leave. Initially, the Magpies demanded £20 million for an immediate release. However, despite the significant gap in their valuations, Manchester United announced at the beginning of July that Ashworth would start his new role immediately.

While the exact fee Manchester United paid to terminate Ashworth’s contract with Newcastle remains undisclosed, former Manchester City financial advisor Stefan Borson suggested to Football Insider that the figure was significantly lower than the rumored £10 million.

“There is quite a lot of rumor and counter-rumor about how much Newcastle settled for in the end on Ashworth,” Borson stated. “I did hear one source say to me the fee was as low as £3 million. I’ve heard that it was well below £10 million and nowhere near some of the numbers that have been rumored.”

Newcastle United found themselves in a challenging negotiating position due to their close call with the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

CEO Darren Eales admitted that the club was under pressure, which likely influenced the final settlement. Borson added, “At the end of the day, Newcastle were over a barrel as they admitted last week. The CEO Darren Eales admitted that it was very close at the last minute in terms of Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). I don’t think they were in a very good negotiating position at the death. I suspect United did a decent deal.”

Ashworth’s appointment is expected to bring significant benefits to Manchester United. With a proven track record in football management, he is poised to enhance the club’s strategic planning and talent acquisition. Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s commitment to improving the club’s overall structure aligns with Ashworth’s expertise, making this a promising partnership.

Ashworth’s arrival signals a new era for Manchester United, focusing on both immediate and long-term goals. His experience and strategic vision are anticipated to drive the club towards greater success.

By prioritizing a strong management team, Manchester United aims to create a sustainable model that supports both on-field performance and financial stability.

Dan Ashworth’s move to Manchester United represents a strategic investment in the club’s future. As the new sporting director, Ashworth brings a wealth of experience and a reputation for excellence in football management.

Despite the complexities surrounding his transfer, Manchester United’s ability to secure Ashworth’s services at a reduced fee highlights their determination to strengthen the club’s leadership. Fans and stakeholders alike can look forward to the positive impact Ashworth is expected to have on the Red Devils’ journey towards renewed success.
