Newcastle United are preparing to spend again as they look to strengthen their squad for the second half of the season, and this time their attention has turned firmly toward the heart of midfield.

After focusing heavily on attacking additions during the summer, the club now appears ready to rebalance the squad by investing in a young central midfielder who is seen as a long-term solution rather than a short-term fix.

The campaign so far has been a mixed one for Eddie Howe’s side. Newcastle currently sit in the middle of the Premier League table, far from where supporters hoped they would be at this stage. In Europe, however, the picture is brighter.

A solid position in the Champions League league phase has left the Magpies well placed to reach the knockout rounds, keeping the season very much alive on multiple fronts.

With a demanding schedule ahead and ambitions that stretch beyond domestic football, Newcastle know they must plan carefully for both the present and the future.

That thinking has led the club to identify a standout young talent who could shape the midfield for years to come. Javi Guerra of Valencia has emerged as a major target, with reports suggesting Newcastle see him as a priority signing.

The Spanish midfielder has been monitored closely for some time, with scouts watching him regularly in La Liga and feeding positive reports back to the club’s recruitment team. Sporting director Ross Wilson is believed to be ready to back that interest with a serious offer, potentially worth around £20 million.

At just 22 years of age, Guerra has already built a strong reputation in Spain. He is widely described as a special talent, a player with the kind of all-round ability that sets him apart from others in his age group.

Comfortable on the ball, intelligent in his movement, and brave in possession, he is the type of midfielder who can link play while also making late runs into the penalty area. Those qualities have made him a regular name on Newcastle’s shortlist as they look to evolve their style and add more energy to the middle of the pitch.

Despite recently signing a new contract with Valencia, Guerra’s situation at his boyhood club is not entirely straightforward. While he has featured regularly this season, he has often been withdrawn early and has only completed a full match on a handful of occasions.

That has led to some frustration, especially for a player who is clearly eager to continue developing and playing at the highest possible level. Even so, Valencia still see him as part of their long-term plans, which could make negotiations challenging.

From Newcastle’s point of view, the interest makes perfect sense. The midfield trio of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, and Joelinton has been the engine room of Eddie Howe’s success in recent seasons.

At their best, they are powerful, aggressive, and technically strong. However, the demands of competing in the Premier League, Europe, and domestic cups have begun to show. Performances have dipped at times, and it has become clear that relying on the same core week after week is not sustainable.

Joelinton has struggled to hit the same heights he reached previously, while Guimaraes and Tonali have been asked to carry a heavy load. Over a long season, that can take its toll.

Lewis Miley has stepped in admirably and shown maturity beyond his years, but he is still learning his trade. Jacob Ramsey, brought in to add depth and quality, has yet to truly settle and make the impact many expected.

This is where Guerra could fit perfectly. He would not be expected to carry the midfield on his own from day one. Instead, he could be eased into the side, learning from experienced teammates while adapting to the pace and physicality of English football.

His age is a huge advantage, giving Newcastle the chance to develop him gradually while benefiting from his talent over many seasons.

Of course, any deal will come with obstacles. Valencia are proud of the players they produce and are reluctant sellers, especially when it comes to someone who has been with the club since his teenage years. Convincing them to part ways will require not only money but also the right approach and timing.

For Newcastle, though, the pursuit of Guerra shows clear intent. It signals a desire to think long-term, to build a squad that can compete consistently at the highest level. If the club can strike the right deal, they may be securing a midfielder who becomes a key figure at St James’ Park for the next decade.
