Newcastle reopen talks with Man City star who’s pushing for January transfer

Newcastle United have reopened conversations with the representatives of James Trafford as the young England goalkeeper pushes hard for a January exit from Manchester City.

What was meant to be a dream step forward in his career has quickly become the kind of situation goalkeepers dread, leaving him eager to find a club that will give him the regular football he expected when he agreed to return to the Etihad.

Trafford joined City from Burnley in July in a deal worth around £19 million, arriving with the belief that he would be groomed as Ederson’s long-term successor.

City had convinced him that they saw him as a future No. 1, and the move seemed like the natural next step after his standout performances in the Championship, where he kept 15 clean sheets and established himself as a rising star in English football.

But his expectation of meaningful Premier League minutes collapsed overnight when Manchester City unexpectedly completed a £40 million deal for Gianluigi Donnarumma on deadline day. The signing of the Italian international, a European Championship winner and one of the world’s most recognisable goalkeepers, pushed Trafford down the pecking order instantly.

Instead of being a developing understudy, he found himself limited to only two cup appearances and completely on the fringes of the Premier League squad. For a 23-year-old who had been building serious momentum in his career, the lack of opportunity has been deeply frustrating.

Those close to the situation say Trafford feels this season has been a “wasted year” and that he is “desperate” to get back on the pitch regularly. With the World Cup approaching and England manager Gareth Southgate continuing to assess all goalkeeping options, Trafford knows he cannot afford to spend the prime months of the campaign watching from the bench.

This has led to him instructing his representatives to secure him an escape route as soon as the January window opens, and Newcastle United are ready to take advantage.

The Magpies were close to signing Trafford during the summer, holding detailed negotiations over a £20 million deal before Pep Guardiola intervened personally to keep him at the Etihad. Now, circumstances have changed dramatically, and Newcastle see an opportunity to strengthen a key position while giving the young keeper the platform he craves.

With Nick Pope struggling with a shoulder issue that has limited his availability and with Newcastle lacking depth in the position, a move for Trafford makes complete sense.

The club has already reopened formal discussions with the player’s agents and are exploring different ways to structure the deal. One option on the table is a loan move with a mandatory £25 million obligation to buy, allowing Newcastle to manage their finances sensibly while securing a long-term solution. A straight permanent transfer also remains possible if both clubs can agree on a fee.

For Trafford, the appeal is obvious. At Newcastle he would have a genuine chance of playing immediately, competing in a team pushing for a top-six finish and continuing to grow under a manager who has shown he can elevate young talent.

The development of players like Anthony Gordon under Eddie Howe will only encourage the young goalkeeper to consider Tyneside the ideal destination to restart his momentum.

Manchester City, meanwhile, may be open to the move as they continue to navigate financial fair play considerations. Selling Trafford would not only recoup their initial investment but also help free up resources for potential January reinforcements, particularly in midfield.

Although Tottenham and West Ham are also monitoring the situation, Newcastle’s previous relationship with Trafford’s camp, their ambition, and the chance of immediate involvement give them a strong advantage.

With January approaching quickly, the player’s camp hopes for a fast resolution to avoid wasting more valuable time on the bench.

If Newcastle can finalise the deal, Trafford’s difficult spell at City could turn into a story of revival, offering him the platform he needs to fulfil the promise that once made him one of England’s most exciting young goalkeepers.

All signs point to a decisive few weeks ahead, with St James’ Park looking increasingly like the stage where his next chapter will begin.
