Newcastle United have officially completed the signing of highly-rated England youth international Josh Kenchington, confirming what had been circulating for weeks among close followers of the club’s academy scene.
The talented young centre-back, born in Yorkshire, has joined the Magpies in a deal believed to be worth around £350,000 plus potential add-ons.
The move, which was first revealed in an NUFC Blog exclusive, has now been finalised following the completion of Premier League family checks and official registration.
Newcastle fought off competition from several top Premier League clubs to secure his signature, including strong interest from Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Brighton & Hove Albion.
The club’s persistence and clear long-term vision for youth development ultimately convinced the player and his family that St James’ Park was the right place to continue his football journey.
Josh Kenchington, who has represented England at Under-15 level, is regarded as one of the most promising defenders of his age group in the country.
Standing tall and confident on the ball, he has often drawn comparisons to fellow Yorkshireman John Stones for his composure, passing range, and ability to build from the back.

His performances for Barnsley’s youth sides earned him the Academy Player of the Year award earlier this year, highlighting just how highly regarded he was at Oakwell.
Despite his young age, Kenchington has already been playing above his level for several years, making appearances in Barnsley’s Under-18 setup when he was only 14.
His maturity, technical ability, and reading of the game have marked him out as a standout prospect, and Newcastle believe he can grow into a top-level defender within their academy system.
As part of his move, Josh will continue his education in Newcastle while training full-time at the club’s Little Benton Academy. The setup provides the perfect balance between football and academics, allowing him to develop both on and off the pitch in a professional and supportive environment.
Those who have watched him closely say he has the temperament and drive to go far, and Newcastle’s staff see him as a key part of their long-term development strategy.
After sealing his move, Kenchington took to Instagram to thank everyone at Barnsley for their support during his time there. “Where do I start? Five years at this great academy, filled with ups and downs, a rollercoaster of emotions,” he wrote.
“I’d like to thank everyone at the club academy staff, players, and every coach along the way. I’ll never forget the memories or how much I progressed. But it’s time now for the next chapter of my life. We move.”
It’s clear that Newcastle have added another exciting young talent to their ranks one who fits perfectly into the club’s growing commitment to developing homegrown stars for the future.
While Kenchington will begin his journey in the academy setup, his progress will undoubtedly be one to watch closely in the coming years.
Welcome to Newcastle, Josh Kenchington a name we may soon be hearing much more often at St James’ Park.
