West Ham United are beginning to realize that their decision to sign Callum Wilson over the summer may have been a misstep.

The move, which once promised to bring experience and reliability to their attack, has instead turned into a growing concern for both the club and the player. After five years at St James’ Park, Wilson left Newcastle United with hopes of reviving his career in London, but things have not gone according to plan.

Wilson joined Newcastle from Bournemouth back in 2020 and quickly established himself as a key figure under various managers.

His ability to find the net, intelligent movement, and composed finishing made him a fan favorite. Across 130 appearances, he scored 49 goals a solid record that reflected his value when fit. Unfortunately, injuries became a recurring theme during his time in the North East.

His final season with Newcastle saw him score just once as he battled ongoing fitness issues, and by the end of his contract, the club decided not to renew it.

When West Ham swooped in to sign him on a free transfer, it seemed like a sensible move. They were getting a proven Premier League striker with a wealth of experience and a good eye for goal. Yet, as the months have passed, the optimism surrounding Wilson’s arrival has quickly faded.

The 33-year-old has struggled to make an impact in East London, often finding himself on the bench or completely left out of the action.

During West Ham’s recent 2-0 defeat to Brentford, Wilson didn’t play a single minute. Instead, Nuno Espirito Santo turned to young forward Callum Marshall, signaling that Wilson has slipped down the pecking order.

It was a clear indication that the coaching staff may no longer see him as part of their immediate attacking plans. Even when given the opportunity, like his 65-minute appearance against Leeds United, Wilson has struggled to influence games.

His lack of sharpness and declining pace have raised concerns that he may no longer be capable of leading the line at this level.

According to The Times, there is now a growing belief within West Ham that signing Wilson was a mistake. The club’s decision to rely solely on him as their main attacking reinforcement is being questioned internally.

The team is severely lacking in goal threat, and their struggles in front of goal have left them sitting second-bottom in the Premier League table. Many inside the club now feel they should have brought in a younger, more dynamic forward to complement or compete with Wilson rather than depend on him entirely.

This realization has reportedly prompted West Ham to explore the possibility of signing another striker in the January transfer window. Such a move could put Wilson’s future in serious doubt.

He may soon find himself surplus to requirements, especially if the Hammers secure a more consistent goal scorer.

Ironically, West Ham’s next fixture is against Wilson’s former club, Newcastle United the team where he enjoyed his best years. It’s uncertain whether he’ll start, come off the bench, or remain an unused substitute.

Still, the emotional aspect of facing his old teammates could serve as motivation for the veteran striker to prove a point. A goal against Newcastle would mean more than just getting on the scoresheet; it would be a reminder of his enduring quality, even as his career enters its twilight.

Yet, given Nuno’s apparent uncertainty about his best lineup, it remains unclear whether Wilson will get that chance.

His limited game time suggests that the manager’s trust in him is fading. For now, all signs point toward a player caught between past glories and an uncertain future.

As West Ham prepare to face Newcastle, Wilson stands at a crossroads hoping for one last spark to reignite his career, while his new club quietly accepts that their summer gamble might have backfired.
