Nick Pope has expressed how proud he feels to have been named as part of Newcastle United’s leadership group, marking another milestone in his impressive career with the Magpies.

The experienced goalkeeper, who has featured in nearly every match for Newcastle this season, has now stepped into a new role off the pitch, one that highlights his growing importance within Eddie Howe’s squad.

Pope’s inclusion comes after the departure of former striker Callum Wilson, who left St James’ Park in the summer. Wilson’s exit created a vacancy within the leadership group a circle of senior players responsible for setting standards, guiding younger teammates, and maintaining unity within the dressing room.

The group, originally made up of Jamaal Lascelles, Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn, Jacob Murphy, and Bruno Guimarães, now welcomes Pope as its newest member following a vote among the players.

Having joined Newcastle from Burnley in 2022, Pope has established himself as a dependable and commanding presence between the posts. His consistent performances and calm demeanor have earned him great respect both on and off the field.

Speaking about his selection, the 32-year-old described the appointment as a moment of pride and gratitude, emphasizing how much it means to be recognized by his teammates.

“It’s a really exciting thing to be part of,” Pope said in his first official message as a member of the leadership group. “Anything you get voted into by your fellow players is a proud moment.

I’ve been here for three years, and I’m really happy they’ve chosen me to represent them alongside the other leaders. We’ve got a great mix of players from different backgrounds and experiences, and that variety brings balance and strength to the squad. I’m proud to be part of the group and I’ll do my best to carry on the great work that’s already been done.”

He also highlighted how his experience in football can help guide the younger players within the team. Having played in the Premier League for several seasons and represented England at international level, Pope understands the challenges that come with top-flight football.

“I’ve been around the block and seen a lot of different scenarios,” he added. “That experience is something I can use to support others in the squad, especially the younger lads who are still learning what it takes at this level.”

Alongside this leadership recognition came another significant update Pope’s contract situation. Many Newcastle fans had believed that the goalkeeper’s deal was entering its final year, as his initial four-year contract from 2022 was due to expire in 2026.

However, it has now been revealed that Pope quietly extended his contract last year, adding an extra 12 months to his deal and keeping him at the club until the summer of 2027.

When asked about the surprise renewal, Pope smiled and explained that the extension had already been signed in July 2023. “It’s tough to say how it feels because I actually signed that deal back in July 2023,” he said with a grin.

“So, I was really happy about it then, and now my contract runs until 2027. I’m looking forward to staying here as long as I can. The club is constantly evolving every transfer window, every few months, there’s something new.

Whether it’s new players, upgrades to the training ground, or just how we grow as a team, it’s been great to be a part of that progress.”

Since joining Newcastle, Pope has played a vital role in the club’s transformation under Eddie Howe. His commanding presence has been instrumental in helping the Magpies secure Champions League qualification and compete at the top level again.

Reflecting on the club’s journey so far, Pope shared his excitement about what lies ahead. “You want to be part of it moving forward,” he said. “We’ve already achieved some big things our first trophy, two Champions League qualifications and now the goal is to keep pushing and build on that success.”

Nick Pope’s quiet leadership, consistency, and humility have made him one of Newcastle’s most respected figures. His addition to the leadership group not only reflects the faith his teammates and coaches have in him but also underlines his growing influence at the club.

With his future secured until 2027, and his leadership role now official, Pope’s presence will continue to be a cornerstone of Newcastle United’s ambitions—both on and off the pitch.
