Report: ‘Unstoppable’ Newcastle star wants to join Champions League giants in worrying blow for Howe

Nick Woltemade has quickly become one of the most talked-about players in English football since joining Newcastle United, but reports from Germany suggest that the towering striker already has his sights set on a dream move in the future.

According to German outlet Bild, the 23-year-old forward hopes to one day play for Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich a club he has admired since his childhood.

Woltemade, who arrived at St. James’ Park this summer from VfB Stuttgart for a club-record £69 million fee, has made an electric start to life in the Premier League.

Standing at an imposing 6’9″, the German striker has combined physical dominance with technical brilliance, scoring four goals in his first five appearances in black and white.

His early form has not only endeared him to Newcastle fans but also rekindled Bayern’s interest in a player they were reportedly monitoring closely during the transfer window.

Before Newcastle swooped in, Bayern Munich were among the clubs linked with a move for Woltemade, who enjoyed a breakout 2024/25 season in Germany.

During his final year at Stuttgart, he scored 17 goals in 33 matches, helping the club punch above expectations and secure a strong Bundesliga finish.

That campaign saw him emerge as one of Europe’s most promising young strikers, attracting attention from top teams across the continent.

However, it was Newcastle who ultimately won the race, paying £6 million more than what they had previously spent on Alexander Isak to secure his services.

Despite his success in England, Bild claims Woltemade remains ambitious about returning to Germany one day specifically to join Bayern Munich, the 33-time Bundesliga champions and perennial Champions League contenders.

For a player who grew up in Bremen and developed his game in German football, the idea of representing the country’s biggest club is understandably appealing.

Still, his current focus remains firmly on Newcastle, where he is thriving under Eddie Howe’s leadership.

Talent scout Jacek Kulig described Woltemade as “unstoppable,” and so far, that assessment seems spot on. His combination of strength, intelligence, and composure has made him a nightmare for defenders in the Premier League.

In many ways, he has picked up exactly where Isak left off before his controversial departure to Liverpool. Unlike his predecessor, however, Woltemade has quickly embraced the club’s culture, engaging with supporters and showing a strong commitment to Howe’s system.

Newcastle’s management, though, will be wary. They have already lived through one star striker viewing the club as a stepping stone.

Alexander Isak’s departure to Liverpool this summer came after months of speculation, and while the Magpies managed to replace him seamlessly with Woltemade, losing another key player to a European heavyweight would be a bitter pill to swallow.

The situation highlights Newcastle’s broader challenge competing at the very top level while retaining their best talent. Backed by the Saudi Public Investment Fund, the club has made remarkable progress in recent years.

Last season, Newcastle lifted the Carabao Cup after an emotional Wembley victory over Liverpool and finished fifth in the Premier League, securing a return to the Champions League. It was one of the best campaigns in their modern history and a clear statement that they belong among England’s elite.

However, there is still a gap between Newcastle and Europe’s biggest clubs the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich. These are teams that offer not only financial might but also a consistent presence at the highest level of European football.

For a young player like Woltemade, the temptation to join Bayern where he could compete for league titles and Champions League glory every season will always linger.

For now, though, Eddie Howe and his staff can take comfort in knowing they have a player who is not only performing at an elite level but also seems genuinely happy at St. James’ Park.

Newcastle’s project continues to grow stronger, and with Woltemade leading the line, the club looks well-equipped to challenge for major honours again this season.

Still, the Magpies will need to ensure that history does not repeat itself. They cannot afford another situation like Isak’s, where ambition and opportunity elsewhere overshadow the progress being made on Tyneside.

To keep players like Woltemade committed long-term, Newcastle must continue to match their stars’ ambitions both on the pitch and in the transfer market.

If they do that, perhaps one day, the idea of leaving for Bayern Munich won’t be as tempting. After all, for players who buy into Eddie Howe’s vision, Newcastle United is quickly becoming one of Europe’s most exciting destinations in its own right.
