Eddie Howe has responded calmly but firmly after Liverpool manager Arne Slot appeared to take a sly dig at Newcastle United earlier this week.
Slot’s comments about Alexander Isak’s move from a “smaller club” didn’t sit well with many, especially given the respect Newcastle has earned over the past few seasons under Howe’s leadership.
The controversy began after Liverpool’s 5-1 Champions League win over Eintracht Frankfurt, a match in which Isak was substituted at halftime due to a groin issue.
During his post-match interview, Slot referenced the striker’s lack of pre-season involvement before moving to Liverpool and implied that training at Newcastle didn’t compare to that of the Premier League champions.
His remark “you cannot compare, maybe a player who hasn’t trained or played in pre-season at a smaller club than if you go to Liverpool” was seen by many as an unnecessary and disrespectful jab toward Newcastle.
Isak’s move to Anfield was already a heated topic after the forward reportedly went on strike to force the transfer, leaving some frustration behind at St. James’ Park. However, Howe refused to be drawn into a war of words, showing his characteristic composure and class.

Speaking during his press conference on Friday, the Newcastle boss said: “I don’t think it’s wise for me to get involved in those discussions.
Alex is no longer at this football club. It’s best to stay away from it.” His response highlighted his professionalism and focus on the present rather than lingering on past controversies.
When asked by Chronicle Live about Newcastle’s facilities and whether Slot’s comments had any merit, Howe was quick to defend the club’s standards.
“The set-up here is very good,” he said. “It’s not perfect there are things we want to improve and grow but the owners have invested heavily in the infrastructure.
You can see building work going on around the training ground, and that’s all aimed at helping us become even better in the future. I’ve got no complaints. We have elite athletes here, and, touch wood, they’re managing well.”
Howe’s words reflected the quiet confidence and stability he has brought to Newcastle since his arrival. He understands the importance of maintaining focus amid outside noise and has often emphasized unity, discipline, and continuous improvement.
When asked if he felt the need to defend the club’s stature or its fans in light of Slot’s “smaller club” remark, Howe simply replied: “I don’t feel I have to do that.” It was a typically measured response one that underscored his belief that Newcastle’s progress and ambition speak louder than any words could.
Under Howe, Newcastle United have reestablished themselves as one of England’s most competitive sides, competing in Europe, attracting world-class players, and earning global respect.
The club’s growth, both on and off the pitch, reflects a long-term vision backed by solid leadership, passionate supporters, and continued investment.
While Slot’s comments may have ruffled feathers, Howe’s calm demeanor and refusal to be drawn into petty disputes demonstrate why he remains one of the most respected managers in the Premier League. His focus is firmly on Newcastle’s future a future that looks brighter than ever.
