Nick Woltemade’s arrival at Newcastle United on August 30th from VfB Stuttgart marked one of the club’s big late summer signings. Just two days later, the Magpies strengthened further by bringing in Yoane Wissa from Brentford.
Before the duo’s arrival, Newcastle had shown serious interest in another Premier League striker Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Jørgen Strand Larsen.
Reports from Norway and England in August revealed that Newcastle made two strong offers to Wolves, believed to be around £50 million and £55 million, but both were rejected.
Despite the significant bids, Wolves were determined not to part ways with their Norwegian forward, who had quickly become a vital part of their squad.

Jørgen Strand Larsen, who joined Wolves from Celta Vigo in July 2024, impressed immediately in his first Premier League season, scoring 14 goals and providing five assists.
His performances caught the attention of Eddie Howe and his recruitment team, who viewed him as a potential key addition to Newcastle’s attack. However, the move never materialized due to Wolves’ firm stance.
In a recent interview with Norwegian outlet Dagbladet, Strand Larsen opened up about the failed transfer and how close it came to happening. “Close enough,” he admitted.
“Of course, there was a lot of interest. It was something we were open to me, Tore Pedersen [my agent], and my team. But I stayed, and I’m quite happy with that too.”
The striker went on to explain that Newcastle’s approach made him rethink his original career plan. “The plan was to be in Wolverhampton for three or four years and then take the next step,” he said.
“When interest like that comes after just one year, it shows I’m in the right place. I got a clear message from Wolverhampton that I’m not for sale.”
His response highlights not only his professional maturity but also Wolves’ faith in his abilities. For Newcastle, it’s another case of a target slipping away despite their best efforts.
But for Strand Larsen, the experience served as confirmation that his progress in English football is being recognized.
While Newcastle went on to secure other signings, the story of Jørgen Strand Larsen’s blocked transfer is a reminder of how unpredictable football negotiations can be where timing, ambition, and loyalty often collide.
