Amanda Staveley sparks fresh takeover talk amid Newcastle United message

Former Newcastle United co-owner Amanda Staveley has reignited takeover speculation after being seen at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium during an NFL London game.

The 52-year-old businesswoman, who played a key role in Newcastle’s Saudi-backed takeover in 2021, was among the VIP guests for the match between the Cleveland Browns and Minnesota Vikings, fuelling rumours about her renewed interest in acquiring a Premier League club.

Reports have linked Staveley with an attempt to purchase Tottenham Hotspur in recent months. According to The Telegraph, her company, PCP International Finance, was part of a consortium that failed in its bid to buy the North London club from current owner Joe Lewis.

Spurs later confirmed they had received and firmly rejected two separate proposals to acquire ENIC’s entire stake in the club.

One came from Staveley’s group, while the other involved a consortium led by Dr. Roger Kennedy and Wing-Fai Ng through Firehawk Holdings Limited.

The club made it clear that Tottenham Hotspur is not for sale and that ENIC has no intention of accepting any such offer.

Staveley’s presence at the stadium has nonetheless sparked debate among fans and analysts about her long-term ambitions in football ownership.

Her appearance comes at a symbolic time, coinciding with the fourth anniversary of Newcastle United’s historic takeover.

That deal, led by Staveley and backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and the Reuben family, transformed the Tyneside club into one of the richest in the world.

During her tenure at Newcastle, Staveley became a highly visible figure and a passionate advocate for the club’s revival.

She was credited with playing a crucial role in modernizing the club’s structure and creating a sense of unity between ownership and supporters a relationship that had long been fractured under previous owner Mike Ashley.

Her departure from Newcastle in the summer of 2024 came after PIF and the Reuben family bought out her remaining shares, formally ending her involvement in the club’s day-to-day operations.

Despite stepping away, Staveley has remained vocal about her love for football and her desire to stay connected to the game at the highest level.

Her recent public appearances, combined with persistent reports of her exploring investment opportunities in other Premier League sides, have only added to the speculation.

Tottenham, with its state-of-the-art stadium and global commercial reach, represents one of the few elite English clubs that might match her ambitions.

In a recent emotional interview on the High Performance Podcast, Staveley reflected on her time at Newcastle. When a message from a fan was read to her thanking her for her efforts, she broke down in tears, describing her period as co-owner as “a privilege.”

She spoke warmly about the supporters and the journey they shared, expressing how deeply she valued the opportunity to be part of the club’s transformation. Her comments painted the picture of someone who remains deeply attached to the sport, not merely as a business venture but as a genuine passion.

Insiders close to Staveley suggest she continues to explore options to return to football ownership, either through a minority investment or a full takeover, should the right opportunity arise.

Tottenham’s rejection of her consortium’s bid may not necessarily mark the end of her interest, as her track record shows persistence and long-term vision the same determination that helped her navigate the complex process of acquiring Newcastle.

For now, Tottenham maintains its stance that the club is not for sale. But Amanda Staveley’s appearance in the directors’ box, combined with her history of orchestrating high-level deals, ensures that speculation will not fade anytime soon.

Whether she becomes part of another Premier League ownership group or pursues ventures elsewhere, her influence on English football remains undeniable.

Her story reflects that of a determined entrepreneur who, despite setbacks, continues to leave her mark on the game and for Tottenham fans, her presence alone has added a new layer of intrigue to what is already one of football’s most closely watched ownership landscapes.
